I have to agree with Corey QUALITY backlinks are key.

Ways to get quality backlinks

1) Write great content

2) Submit to carnivals

3) Bookmark each post (Fwisp, PF Buzz, Digg, Tip'd, Stumble, etc.)

4) Create a Google plus account and share your links.

Did I mention write awesome content?

One of the actions/attempts I have taken now to get a higher PR for the home page is to reduce the number of links on my home page. Before I had something like 135 outgoing links from the home page.

From several sources I heard that this was too much. I am not sure why; maybe too much link juice flowing away??.

In any case I have reduced this now to around 90 links or so (mostly to other pages on my own site).

We'll see if this helps in about 6 months.

Great content, and links back to your site are key.

It would also help to get media exposure because that will drive traffic to your site, and generate buzz and hopefully links to your site.

Guys,

I know how to get it from PR 3 to PR 4 in 2 updates. It worked well for me and so you all can give it a shot..

1 — Update your home page content and limit meta tags — Don't stuff repeat keywords.

for example, if your main keyword is online mortgage — stick to it and don't try other combo's such as online mortgage tips, online mortgage site, online mortgage california etc

Google will consider this as stuffing.. use alternative keywords as real estate, home financing which are unique and don't conflict with the main keyword.

2 – Use Facebook, Twitter for a period of 1-2 weeks and create unique posts that link back to the home page using these keywords and Index your home page by getting in pinged to various SN sites and check the result for yourself.. It might not work for all of you, but it did work for me.. The key to improving PR whether its on the lower end or higher end is to periodically update your site content and ensure the keyword density is minimal and create some nice social signals..

cheers
