What are your thoughts on partial rss feeds?

Some bloggers only show excerpts in their RSS feed forcing the reader to visit the blog to read the complete post.  What are your thoughts on this?  Do you think it hampers visitors or helps traffic?

It annoys me a tiny bit and I usually don't click through…not because they did it but because I do not have enough time to click through on all of them…

I'd rather skim the post in my feed reader and then click through for a closer look and/or to leave a comment.

I tend to never click through unless the title/summary REALLY draws me in.  eventually I realize that i never read the full article and scrolling by the summaries are just a nusance and unsubscribe.

I am probably not typical.  I can see the advantage in teasing the reader and getting them to click through..

I do it because it is the default setup for my feed. I'm not even sure how to change it. I may look into it and change it in the future.

It can be kind of annoying, especialy if you are reading the feed on a mobile device. However, it will generate more visits on your site but the flip side is you may lose some subscribers or have less people reading your full articles.

It annoys me. I don't think I'm currently subscribed to any partial RSS feeds. RSS readers probably aren't going to click ads anyway, so there's little point in forcing them to click through.

Partial feeds – Hate 'Em!

Unless it's something like the NY Times or WSJ or don't bother with partial feeds.

It depends. I publish a full feed now. At one time I was publishing a partial because I had sites duplicating my content. I found a copyright plugin that stopped that and went back to full feeds. I prefer full feeds.

Just go to your settings and reading and switch it to publish a full feed.

Unless it is a known blogger it annoys me to see partial feed.  I don't think it'll improve traffic but stand as a deterrent.  Glad I'm not the only one who felt this way!

What plugin in do you use?  I use one that prints my copyright statement out with my RSS feed but the content thieves still steal my stuff and put it up on their sites – copyright notice and all!  Those of you who were in my latest roundup probably got the pingbacks from the "content thieves".

I am currently publishing my full feed.  The only reason I had ever done partial feeds in the past was to stop the copyright infringement – not to get additional click thrus.  I had one reader email me that she wasn't happy when I had switched to partial feeds.  I like to keep my readers happy to I switched back to full feeds.  With publishing my full feed though at any given time I have 5 or 6 feed stealers and it takes a lot of time to get them to take the stuff down (if they ever do).

I have never used partial feeds on my RSS. Complete seems to be the best for my readers.

I'd like to learn which plugin you're using as well.

The plugin I use to mark my full feeds is RSS Footer and I have it set up to read

before every post.  :-)

Are you talking about a WordPress setting, because I don't use Wordpress?

I checked through the Feedburner settings and didn't see anything when I looked.

I do all of my blog reading by RSS.  If I see a partial feed, I don't subscribe.   When sites change to partials, I tend to unsubscribe.

Same here. I don't like partial. So much to read and go through in Google Reader … Chances are, I'll end up removing it from my RSS too …

Yes he was talking about WP.  If you are using Drupal you can set this option under admin/settings/RSS feed settings.

Thanks, it was pretty easy to find once I took the time to look. I guess I was just being lazy. I switched to a full feed for now. I was getting quite a few click throughs from the feed by using the read more link … but hopefully this will help keep my subscriber number strong.
