I'm a chemical engineer and work for a large raw material supplier.  I'm currently in a sales/marketing job and work with product designers at OEMs. My job is essentially to help them select suitable materials into their new product launches.  I've also worked in procurement, product management, quality, process and production engineering…among other things.  Great thread.

I'm a project manager in health care IT, currently focusing on strategic planning.  This has been a great job and I've had some fantastic opportunities!

I work in health care administration. I did front line work (medical receptionist) for three years. For the past 7 years, I've been on the back end, working on the health plan (insurance) side of a major managed care organization. For the majority of that time I was an admin analyst – doing both secretarial type work as well as reporting and analysis. Now, I have a fancy title that basically means I'm an office manager.

I plan to be where I am for another 2-3 years and then I'd like to move more fully in to operations (I do that as part of my job now) for an international health organization.

I think the reason might be is that its one of the most stable fields out there right now. Unlike a lot of "industries" health care is continuing to grow. 

At the same time, my job is so far removed from a sonographer or a pharma researcher that it doesn't really feel like we're in the same field at all. I probably have more in common with someone who does office management/operations in a financial firm than I do most other people in health care. I just happen to understand the health care lingo.

I used to work clinical myself but I have branched off into management now. I like it and you're right, it is stable. However where I live in Canada, it is a very politically charged environment to work in.

Healthcare is also very politically charged here in the US- especially right now, and especially for an organization like the one I work in. Managed Care Organizations (aka Health Maintenance Organizations – HMOs) are somehow seen as a combination of the greatest evil ever inflicted on the health care receiving public and the saviors of health care in the US. It is a very odd place to be, and when people learn what company I work for (locally) I either get told how they love it or how its the worst place on the planet.

My husband is kinda old-fashioned (especially for being 32) and so I stay at home. So, I guess I'm a housekeeper, budget-er, bill payer, mum (school age now and just 1), errand runner, a sometimes cook, and whatever else needs to be done. I'm also a full-time blogger, even though I don't actually make any money. I still LOVE it though.

I'm a software engineer at a giant software company in silicon valley.
