When someone you don't know is emailing you, asking you to allow them to guest post, with a link to something that makes them money, what do you do?
How do you set the price?
Clearly this is a new "problem" for me — but for you veterans who are actually monetizing your blogs, can you offer a newbie some advice?
Thanks!

I give them my price list.
That price list was built by:
1. Picking a number out of the air.
2. Offering it to advertisers.
2a. If they balked, the next guy got a lower price.
2b. If they jumped on it, the next guy got a higher price.
Early on, some people got really good deals, but it balanced out quickly.

@Jason
I agree with you, and a lot of advertisers got great deals earl on. But quickly I nipped it, and stuck to a minimum price that has been slowly rising through time. Today I have my bare minimum that I charge for advertising or GP, and if someone is not into it, that's fine with me.
I've also been fortunate enough to have developed a pretty good size list of advertisers I developed relationships with. We have mutual respect, they know exactly what they're getting for x-amount paid. Not every ad deal has the same money built into it by the advertiser, some are more skinnier than others.
Either way, majority of the advertising is case by case, while also keeping my base price in mind.

I simply forward it to Crystal @budgetinginthefunstuff.com. Some may ask why. I simply don;t have the desire or energy to haggle with anyone and would rather have someone else do it on my behalf for a cut. She also markets the site to advertisers which is also something I have no interest in doing. It's all part of my mantra of doing what I do best and getting someone better than me to do the rest.

I get a boat load of emails looking to guest post. Only a few hang around when I mention there is a cost to it. I laugh because most of the inquiries make it sound like they are doing me a favor.

Dang it! I just drafted a long reply then accidentally left the page before posting! Ok, I'm over it. ;)
I just accepted a guest post for my blog and didn't even realize that bloggers charge for this privilege! Just goes to show how green I am.
Funancials or anyone else who charges for guest posts – would you mind sharing any guidelines on what to charge? Even a range you've seen? I will definitely start charging, but I wouldn't know where to start!

Depends on the guest post. I have a standard e-mail reply stating that fellow bloggers and other writers can guest post – but no links to anything that sells stuff. People who want to sneak in links to sites selling stuff have to pay.
And I am with Funancials on the ones who make it sound as if they are doing me a favour; when are people going to learn? Arogance never pays with me; or even the slight hint of cockiness.

Will they give you a guest post "without charging you a penny?" lol
Your site is a value. You offer exposure and other values to advertisers. Don't give it up for free.

Interesting that I just received a guest post with a link selling products. I never thought to charge for guest posts before. But I definitely will for someone who wants to add a link to sell products.
Funancials, I just sent you an email, since I've never charged before.

Haha -
It would be like me walking into a Ralph Lauren outlet and saying "Hey guys, I've got a deal for you. I'm going to grab these shirts, wear them around so everyone can see them, and THE BEST PART: I'm not going to charge you guys anything."

Maybe I'll try that next time I go to the outlets!

Crystal – I will definitely be on the lookout for your upcoming ebook. I couldn't get either link to work…maybe I'm doing something wrong?

So glad I got in on this conversation when I did! I just received another guest post request! I just might try my hand at charging this time.

Oh. sorry, I should have mentioned that I mostly (and recently) forward any e-mails from advertisers to Justin – he deals with them and usually comes up with a deal. I suck at crunching a deal; particualrly a good one.

For 'guest posts' where the link is obviously to a business site, not a fellow blogger I charge. It started with plucking a number out of the air, that has increased in time. Sometimes I do a bit of negotiating with them. I also use Crystal from Budgeting In The Fun Stuff and she is great at the negotiations and finding you more posts and advertising.
I'm happy to answer any questions too if you want to email me.
When it comes to fellow bloggers I know wanting to guest post I don't charge.
