Hey guys,
I know a lot of people here are gearing up with their online businesses and looking to take their sites to a whole new level. Recently, I decided to rent an office and thought I might share a little about my experiences and what I learned in a new blog post. It's a bit of a doozy in length, but I wanted to share everything because there's a lot I wish someone would have told me about renting an office before I did it!
You can read about it here: What I learned from renting an office

I checked out the article, pretty interesting and detailed.
I think about renting out a studio sometimes or even buying an old building (I also live in a relatively cheap area), so it was good to hear your experiences.
Good luck with your office.

MaximizingMoney – Go for it! Ha, I love living in a cheap part of country because real estate is sooooo cheap. I almost couldn't believe my eyes when the price didn't even come close to what I was expecting. Thanks for the well wishes.
LAMF – Thanks, man. I'm hoping it's just as much a productivity boost going forward as has been for the first few weeks.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! I didn't know you were far enough along in your internet businesses to get an office! Congrats though! I definitely agree that having an office (if only a small one) would improve my productivity. I also get distracted by the dogs or other chores at home.

$131 a month is an absolute steal.

I agree — you won't find those prices around here.

Thanks dudes ;)
I bet you'd be surprised how cheap commercial space is near you. I'm pretty sure this space rented for 3x as much pre-crash.

@IIW I know of a parking spot you can rent for 13 days a month in downtown Toronto that will cost you about $131.

Wow. I just hit craigslist to check out my area. $150-250 for 120-250 square feet.

That's exactly what I mean! You would think the prices would be far, far higher, but the general economy has experienced a long contraction in the pace of new startups, and fewer people are willing to ante up for an office right now. Plus, with these relatively small sizes, it stands to reason that demand from people-heavy businesses is of zero importance.
Commercial real estate is so cheap right now if you take the time to look. That isn't true everywhere, of course, but it is true for A LOT of places.

this is quite amazing!
I have setup my office in my basement so I don't get distracted by anyone. Still, I only work one day a week on my blogs so it's easy to do.
If I ever quit my job, I'll probably buy a condo and use it as an office. Then, the condo would be paid by my corporation and I would build value as I am being more productive. Some of my clients do that too…
very good deal though!

This would also give you a place in the city to stay when you want to get out of the boonies and into the city w/ the wife (and maybe kids!) for some theatre, dinner etc w/o having to worry about driving back out of the big city.

Can't wait to read the post. I have a beautiful home office and work at the library and coffee shops as well. I habituate to my surroundings and like to move around to keep focused.

Great deal on the office rent! This is one option I had not considered, due to the high cost perception.

Has anyone thought of doing a shared working space? There is a place near me (Boulder Digital Arts) that has office space for tech people and they offer events and classes that people can take part in. It keeps you from the lonely side of office work but gives you the space to be distraction free.
