Yesterday I was asked to speak at my old college to seniors that were getting ready to graduate in May. It was meant to be a quick introduction on what finance and money challenges they would be facing in the real world.
During my talk I had asked the 50+ students how many of them knew what a Roth IRA was and guess how many raised their hands…..
Not.A.Single.One.
Not one person knew what a Roth IRA was. Had never even heard of it.
I couldn't believe it.
While driving home I kept thinking how do I get more younger people to understand what a Roth IRA is and why it's important to invest period. I kept thinking that I need to start a "Roth IRA movement'. I chuckled to myself as I thought it sounded a bit absurd.
But this morning it was still with me. Then I thought about Yakezie. Boo-yah!!!
Here's my idea: I want to pick one day sometime in the month of March and get as many PF bloggers to write about "What the Roth IRA is and why you love it". And if you don't love it- that's fine. Write about what you think young people should be investing into.
Young people need this and we can help.
Once I decide on the day, then can we do a massive roundup of each other's posts. I'll even create a button for it. :)
Anyone interested? If so, please join me. I really think this could be awesome.

I wrote a post a long time ago on when to invest in your 401K, Roth IRA, and then Traditional IRA. Needless to say, there is value in all of these…but they need to raise the income limitations on them, right now I don't contribute to one.

I'm definitely interested.
I think it's a great idea…it's not only for young people but for anybody that is in the accumulation stage. I'll be writing about this eventually but people DEFINITELY don't realize how bad of shape the younger generation is going to be in once Social Security collapses.
It's going to be a very bad and scary time for this country. The only way to do anything about it is to start saving NOW.

I'm in!
I actually had a little "training session" a year ago with all of my friends. They were all asking me about their IRA's and 401k's. They bought me coffee, and I explained the details. Win-Win lol

Awesome….love to see the interest. I'm rounding up other PF bloggers right now and I'm going to hit some of the other personal finance companies and get them on board (Credit Karma, Sesame, Betterment, etc).

Yes, I would love to join your movement! I have a Roth IRA myself and am 23 years old. Funny thing is that none of my friends know what it is when I explain it to them.
Since my blog targets young people just out of college, I would gladly write and article about the almighty Roth IRA.

LOVE the idea even though I can't contribute anymore due to the income limit. Maybe I can talk about the Traditional IRA or about Roth IRA conversions? What day are you looking to do this?

I'm in the same boat but we can still educate those that still qualify :) But yes, anything you want to write about that educates people.
I'm thinking the middle to later part of this month. I'm currently reaching out to a bunch of bloggers to get as many on board as possible. I'll have more details soon…..

Hey Jeff,
I'm in. Not that I want to delay this at all, but April is Financial Literacy Month. Would it make sense to do it for FL Month or even Money Smart Week, which several states are participating in across the nation?

I'm game. Is the plan to link to each other's posts on the topic?

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

Sounds good but in their defense I don't think people really get a grasp on those type of things until after they get out of college, get a real job, start making money, and start thinking about adult things. I agree it's never too early to teach, but the concept of saving for retirement is very abstract to someone who is probably focused on getting a job as their number one goal.

Good point. I'll also suggest (this is the financial coach in me) that most of these kids don't even know how to balance a budget, spend less than they make, save for emergencies, and avoid debt. Those skills are critical to free up cash flow so that they can then invest in 401(k)'s and Roths. I'm all about teaching them what a Roth is and how to use it, but we need to teach them how to manage their money in the first place so they will have money to actually use a Roth.

Sounds like an awesome idea. I'm interested if it's not during March 5-11 — I'll have almost no time during Women's Money Week :)
