I am just curious what everyone's ultimate goal is for your blog? I used to think that I wanted to be a really big blogger, but then I saw a number of blogs I read grow and grow until they are no longer personal, and as a result, I don't like them as much. What is your goal for your blog?
Right now I think I just want a steady, active readership and a nice part-time income. What about you?

Groupies.
I want active members, and a nice enough income to make working elsewhere optional.

I've thought about this before as well. As a blog grows, they have to decide whether or not to keep it very personal (like Free Money Finance or Simple Dollar does) or to have a bunch of different staff writers.
I think I'd just like to keep mine as a part-time gig to channel my interest in learning more about personal finance and build my readership.
I love having guest posters, but don't think I would be interested in having staff writers at this time. However, staff writing is a great way to get your name out there!

To provide a different perspective on finance, business, and (most importantly) personal finance. In my opinion, the personal finance blogosphere is oversaturated with very safe, and simple guides to personal finance.
Most bloggers do a great job of making personal finance really simple with ratios, etc. So I'll go the other direction. I want to inject some depth into what is becoming a very topical study of personal finance.
Becoming a popular blogger/earning a living from it isn't a goal. I just enjoy broadcasting ideas.

We have found that 7 tips and 3 long (1000 + word) articles a week was just too much so we wanted to bring someone in once a week to handle a longer article. This way we can find the time to guest post elsewhere.

To write well, entertain, inform, network with good people, and generate revenue. It's a journey.

I will keep Retire By 40 personal. I like the active readers and it would be great if I can make a bit of money. :)
I wouldn't want Retire By 40 to be impersonal. I would probably start another site rather than hire staff writers.

I guess you could say the theme of my blog is more about personal experience with personal finance…as opposed to writing about debt consolidation, which I have never used and know nothing about. I also want to mimic what JT said above…giving some advice and/or opinions that are contrary to the usual PF articles we see out there…after awhile it all just seems regurgitated, I struggle with topics to write about at times because I want to keep a relatively fresh perspective on things.
My actual goal is to generate $100/mo. in income…not because I need the money, my day job pays well and Im not looking to replace it. Rather, it's a challenge for me, seems like it's going to be difficult to consistently achieve that, and in order to achieve it Im going to need the traffic and regular visitors that come with it. I feel good seeing comments from other bloggers out there like the Yakezie…but I want to see even more of the non-bloggers, the one's that "find me" and are intrigued enough to stick around and read more…and it's been a struggle crossing that bridge.

I will be keeping BFS personal. It is my outlet and like Jason said, I love my groupies!
My goal is to be able to work from home by September 2010, but I am accomplishing that via blogging services. I've actually hit my $2500 a month average mark 4 months in a row already and am just showing up for my day job to build up some more padding.
I picture the future of my blog like J Money runs Budgets Are Sexy – personal with guest posts when I am out of town or once a week while I catch my breath. If I do ever get a staff writer, I'd want somebody like Suba since I truly suck at meaty resource posts and my readers do deserve something like that weekly.
Simply put, I love my little community and will be keeping BFS centered on the "personal" part of personal finance with the large majority of the posts coming from me.

This is a really great topic, Melissa.
Ultimately, I'd like to earn a full-time income working from home. I don't expect my blog to generate all of that income, but I'd like it to be at the center of what I do.
Using staff writers at The Family CEO is not in my current plans. But staff writing other places is, so if anyone knows of any opportunities, please pass them along. :-)

My goal is to provide resources to folks who have 'made it' – because there just don't seem to be that many out there for the rich but not uber rich. I also want my kids to read it someday and for it to pay for itself and perhaps a couple of other domain name charges.

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.
Sorry, I couldn't resist that great Conan quote!
I want to build up a business that provides helpful content for readers and at the same time provides a full-time income for me and my family. It's not easy but I'm slowly getting there.

What a variety of answers. This is fun to read.
I am not against staff writers (particularly since I am a staff writer on a few blogs). I just don't like it when a very personal blog suddenly takes out all of the "personal" and becomes more like an income producing machine. It can be very obvious when that happens. I think staff writing can help the blog cover more areas outside of the owner's realm of expertise; I just would also still like to see the owner's voice too.
Who knows, maybe someday I will hire a staff writer too, but I still want to put my own posts up too.

@MITR – Dude, you probably have way more active readers than you think you do. It's weird, really, but every once in a while a new reader will pop out of the woodwork at my blog to leave a comment. A couple of others will go 3-4 weeks without commenting and I start to think I lost them, but they show up again. So, I guess I mean to say, you have readers, for sure. Problem is getting them to comment.
If anyone has any recommendations/tips to that end (getting comments) I'm all ears.

reach financial independence!
I'd like to make enough money out of my blog so I don't have to work at my day job anymore. I'm pretty closed to my goal but I would like have some products rolling before I quit :-)

i like this topic. i like goals. i feel like i should say "i like santa" next. but i digress…
ideally, i'd love to be able to make a living off of my blog. realistically, i'd like to see my blog have a fairly large, active readership and gain enough exposure for my writing to maybe (?) write a book that someone wants to publish. i already have the idea, too!
