I'm just curious. At what point do you need to move to a VPS (virtual private server.)
I assume that if you have enough traffic, the shared hosting wouldn't work that well anymore.
Is this the reason people move to VPS?
What kind of traffic would that have to be?
VPS is quite a bit more expensive than the regular share plan right so I just want to learn.

I too am interested to know..
With current 600 per day page views I am absolutely OK with shared server. What's the threshold, provided you have the standard Linux configuration from gators, daddies etc?
Sam recently migrated Yakezie to VPS..

Basically – your host will tell you when you need to move because your site is consuming too many resources on the shared server.
There are things to consider beyond traffic – such as SQL lookups (database requests). Ask yourself what is slowing down your site?
You could also consider a CDN to speed things up for really cheap. You can use Amazon S3 with Cloudflare and it will cost you less than $1/mo.

I've found that shared hosting hits its limitations anywhere between 1000-2000 pageviews a days. But it depends on the host as well. Some hosts handle the traffic better than others.
A VPS may also give you more control over settings that could potentially speed up your site like being able to compress aspects before serving them to browsers (I think I said that right).
If you find that you are getting 500-type errors, your site is very slow, and you are getting more traffic then you might want to have a talk with your host and consider an upgrade or a move.
Otherwise, you don't need to spend the money unless you need it.

Thanks for the comments. I don't know much about CDN. I'll see how I can sign up with Amazon S3.

Google has a CDN too: http://code.google.com/speed/pss/
It is in limited beta. I tried signing up but they didn't let me in.

Yakezie + 2 other sites are in a dedicated server.
It really depends on traffic. Sometimes, moving to a VPS will downgrade your performance. For example, if you get 1000 PV (it is around 1000 page views that shared host starts to choke, esp. if you have more than 1 site, wordpress is expensive). All the other sites sharing your resources gets very very low traffic, the machine will be a beefy machine and it can handle spikes well. If you consistently use more resources the host will ask you to upgrade but that is a separate issue. It will handle spikes well, esp. with a cache plugin. If you move to a entry level VPS or a dedicated server, you will get 256mb or 512 mb to start with. Even though it might be yours to use, if your site uses a lot of memory moving to VPS would have been bad. I have quite a few websites and even 1 gig memory wasn't enough for me. I moved 4 times before I found something I like. If I had just 1 or 2 sites, I wouldn't have moved at all. I really liked my very small host.
To straight up answer your question, if you have a couple of sites, 1500-2000 (or consistently get traffic spikes from mentions) page views would be right time to start looking. If you have a lot of sites, 1000 page views will start giving problems.

As of now my shared host handled the traffic spike gracefully. Just yesterday it handled 3500 page views for my site. I was constantly tracking the availability with bated breath. Today it's fine with 2000 pageviews so far.
Traffic would subside from tomorrow, if it continues by another mega back link, I think host would contact me.
