I've discussed this with some of you, but in general, when should I consider applying for Google AdSense? My blog is only a month old and I'm focusing on content and quality right now. But looking ahead, should I consider it in 6 months or wait until I have a certain level of subscribers or traffic?
Thanks for the advice!

I have Adsense up on my 1.5 months old site, but too be honest, it's kind of pointless right now. You need a fair amount of traffic to start earning. Plus, the traffic can't really be other financial bloggers because they aren't going to click on any of the links. I knew I wouldn't make anything so early on so it's not like I'm disappointed with the (lack of) results. I mainly got the process started because I wanted to experiment and see what the layout of my site would look like with it.

You can always apply for it and not put it on your site yet. Adsense will only pay out enough to make it worth it if your traffic is fairly good, but it depends on what you want to do :)

I have always put a single adsense unit on my blogs from the time I have half a dozen posts. Even though I don't expect to earn anything off of the ads, you never know when one of your articles may go viral or get shared by a prominent blogger and receive a massive influx of traffic. By the time you realise that your traffic has surged, apply for adsense and place the ad the flood of traffic could have dried out.
That said, I'd limit it to a single ad block that isn't too obtrusive – you don't want to go overboard and give potential readers you are only blogging to push advertising.

There is also the argument that if you know you want to put ads up down the road, you should get your readers used to it now so that they might not have a backlash later (some readers hate advertisements).

It's never too early to start earning money, even if it's a little money right now, eh?

I would say do it now rather than waiting. Adsense, like anything else, has a learning curve. You don't want to build up a ton of traffic then scare them off with some adsense debacle.

Thanks for all the great advice! I was planning on waiting until 6 months from now but I'll apply for Google AdSense now and start learning it.

Thanks, that's a great point that I didn't consider about the ads.

What she said. I would add it right away if you plan to use it in the long run.

On a related note, I got my first adsense click today. The sites I have run in the past all had rates of a just a few cents, so I was pleasantly surprised when a click went through for a few dollars! Great motivation to keep going – I just need a few hundred clicks each day and I can quit my day job haha
