I've had a few press mentions and it would be nice to have those visuals to put on my site. Looking for Grandparents.com, msnbc and millionaire corner icons.
Does anyone know how to obtain and use them legally?

Personally, I didn't ask permission. Just put them on my site.
As far as where I got them…..Fiverr.com. I found a graphics person and told them the look I was going for (small black and white) then sent them the images that I found on the web and they created them for me.
Grand total: $5. :-)

I certainly can't compete with Fiverr's pricing, but I make the graphics for my design clients all the time.

Personally, I think it would take longer to find someone on Fiverr than it would be to just take a screen cap, throw it into Photoshop, and fancy it up a little.

Oh no, don't do it like that! *gasps in horror*
I spend a LOT of time fixing the ones where someone cut and pasted and it looks like they cut and pasted. No screenshots! There are better ways.

Dude. I do almost everything on Fiverr! I'm slightly obsessed with that site.

You say "throw into Photoshop" as simple as say "Go run that marathon" even though you've never ran before in your entire life.
We had photoshop on our PC. My wife could use it some. I tried once and for hours could not figure out how to separate layers. I finally gave up.
Ordering things off Fiverr is like telling your 5 year-old everything you want done EXACTLY the way you want it step by step. And if you use pictures, then it really helps. Out of all the things I've ordered off Fiverr (articles, logos, headers, videos, graphics, etc) I've only had a handful that didn't turn out. And those were the ones that I did NOT spell it out for them exactly what I wanted.

That's a great idea. I never thought of Fiverr, but now I think I'm going to do the same.
If you recommend any specific graphic designers on there (or any other specific people on there for any other task), please share! Otherwise I'll just search. Thanks!

Thanks everyone. I was hoping someone would say, just go here and get that and you are done….(hoping the sites themselves had something to use).
Ah well, now I know.

I tried Fiverr to get a sponsored post I was paid to write and it was a horrible experience. I made sure to go with someone who was in the US and gave them very detailed instructions, but it still seemed like a 5th grade book report that was done the morning it was due.
If you want something done graphics-wise, I would strongly recommend Andrea because not only do you get the project, but she'll also work with you & give you the support you need which I doubt anyone on Fiverr would be willing to do.
Disclaimer: I do not receive any commissions from this mention

And that's why I said "personally." ;-) Now go run that marathon!

I'm not talking best practices here. I'm talking about making a workable image, similar to those on Jeff's site.
(and no offense intended to Jeff — they look fine)
In truth, I would probably grab the image itself (vs. doing a screen cap) and then do a little photoshopping from there. And Jeff, I only have a rudimentary knowledge of Photoshop. In fact, I've never separated a layer in my life…
So this is more like saying "go run a 5k" than "go run a marathon". :-)
All I'm saying is that for something pretty simple like that, it would take me less time to muddle through it myself than it would be to give explain exactly what I want to someone else.

I've had good luck with Fiverr. It has saved me a lot of money, compared to what I might have spent elsewhere. Of course, the experience can vary quite a bit depending on who does your gig. And you need to have reasonable expectations of what you will get for $5.
