Who are your blogging idols, and why? (Both in and out of the pf blogging world…)
What would you most like to learn from them? What do you you think they do best?

Not sure I have any "idols" per se, but some bloggers I'm especially impressed by based on what I've seen them do:
Blogging in General:
- Seth Godin. He writes daily marketing/business posts that are not too wordy, and fairly concise. These posts don't exactly have the look of research posts:) They're more about quick insights. Yet, his blog is immensely popular with a ton of people.
In the PF world:
- Our own Sam. His vision in creating Yakezie was brilliant, in my view. I respect what he was able to create while keeping a busy schedule of own.
- FMF. Probably because his blog was the first I came across, but he's been at it for a long time and keeps on going strong. Also, it doesn't look like it's visually changed much in terms of the layout, etc in a while but that doesn't deter followers.

Ha! Thanks for the kind words.
I'm actually in the process of updating the look of FMF at bit (not much) — to at least get my design up to the early 2000's in style.
Then again, I've been "working on" that for some time now, so who knows when I'll get it done.

FMF is also one of the bloggers I am impressed by as well. I especially admire that even though he's been at it for so long and probably has opportunities left and right to hire staff writers and others to run his blog, he has kept very personally "in touch" with his content and site as well as running Best of Money Carnival.

Agreed! When I started reading PF blogs, I (as many probably do) found a lot of the 'big' blogs (which I categorize FMF in for sure). Over time, I've drifted away from reading many of the bigger blogs not only because I found a lot of smaller blogs which were more captivating to me, but because it seemed many of the bigger ones got too generic (every post is 12 Ways To Do Something), too distant from their readers, or too cocky. FMF has never fallen into any of those traps, though, and I still look forward to his articles enthusiastically!

I would say Pat Flynn. He's the most down to earth guy I can think of.

My idols are JD Roth, Leo Babauta and Darren Rowse.
I don't judge by how the person treated me, I go by the way they created business out of their blogs just by sitting on a table, a mark of true entrepreneur

I have to agree with Squirrelers, Seth Godin is an inspiring person, and has produced a great blog.

And I agree with you both. Seth's blog rocks.
Since I straddle the personal finance/mom blogging line, I'll throw in Money Saving Mom. She's done big, big things and I like the way she approaches it.

Darren Rowse – Inspired my love of blogging and taught me most of what I know
Ramit Sethi – For his no holds barred style (I have met him once in person)
Chris Guillebau – For trying to make the world a better place and helping people live their own dream (Met him in person and had a beer with him, such a great guy)
Tim Ferris – For his overall awesomeness in almost everything he does

Oops, I did mean to answer this! I would say Pat Flynn, because he is just so good at blogging/helping others while happening to sell at the same time.

I also really admire Magazine Man (http://masthead.blogspot.com/). He's an awesome writer and I'd love to be that entertaining.

I'm a huge fan of The Bloggess. Her style is similar to mine (though she is WAY WAY cooler and I could never compare) in that she tells it like it is. I would love to be half as awesome as her someday.
I also love the guy from Waiter Rant. That's one of the first blogs I ever read on a regular (psychotic) basis.

For me it is
JD Roth: He inspired me to write and I want to write better than him one day :)
Pat @ Smart Passive Income : I like his advice on blogging as a business.
Chris Guillebeau : Have not met him, but I really like his books and his general help for people trying to live their dreams (hopefully I will meet him next summer at the WDS)
Ramit : For inspiring me to just get moving lol.

My idols are JD Roth, Leo Babauta and Darren Rowse.
I'd have to say it's their blogs that inspired me to take the leap of faith and create my site.
But since then there have been SO many writers and people out there who have been awesome in both their content and in their willingness to share what they know.

I cant say that I have any idols. I have a great admiration for those who have kept it personal and professional while pumping out quality work on a weekly basis. To be honest, a lot of the members on this very forum fit that description.
Sure, the blogs with 100k feedburner subscribers are impressive, and that success inspriring, but one of the the first things I do when I visit any new site or blog is look at the archives (if available). One of the most telling things about that blogger is the length of time they have been at it. When I visit a site whose archive begins in 2003, chances are (first of all) they've written some great content and have found success, and that they have a personality that has gotten them through the ups and downs inherent in blogging and have stuck to it because of the enjoyment of the medium.
Those are the folks who impress me.
