SS, thanks.  Maybe I will keep the blue background if you think it's not too distracting.  No need for you to go to all that trouble.  I just wanted a sleek look to the blog.

I tried following the tutes for getting rid of the navbar & for adding the favicon, but no go.  When I added the navbar elimination code the preview just showd extra messages at the top of the blog above the navbar.  When I tried adding the faicon I got a message saying that it was blocked because a program was trying to override the set code.  Not sure if that was from Blogger or from my computer.  The message flashes on so fast that I can't read it all.

Thanks again for your help.

SS I just noticed I do have a favicom, but it's not one I put on there.  I have no idea if it's always been there or not.  Sigh.

Maggie, I think it is just simple coding errors… I've been there lots of times, myself!  I'll look at it in more detail later tonight and try to give you better instructions.

Im not as keen as the rest of the group on the technical side of things, but maybe because you run your site through a blogger domain and not one of your own, and they force you to use the Blogger favicon.  Seems logical, but I could be wrong.

Money Is the Root,  I'd think so too, but it's not the Blogger favicon.  First it was some kind of Old English Script of an alphabet letter–T or F?  The next time it was a key symbol.  I have no idea what's going on.

Thanks for trying to help.

Jacob, I did those things too (the favicon and the reversing the order)… you are making me feel very clever that I am doing all the right things!  :)

Do you do any sponsored posts or reviews on your site?  That is the one thing that makes me a little leery of Blogger (and actually, of any blog as I hear they can hurt your search engine ranking).  I have a few thoughts on that subject that I will put in another thread when I have time to actually write it.

Back to Blogger… it amazes me all the cool things people are learning how to do with it.  My next change will be adjusting how the comments are shown so that those from me will show up in a different color so they stand out.

I would appreciate if when you figure it out you will share… thanks

Nice work! Looks good. You can also choose a little icon for your site to show up in the

Also – another big thing I did was change around the order of how Google indexes your posts on their search results. For example, their default is to show your Blog Name first, then your title. However, I've found that it's better for SEO to have your title first.

I am very cognizant of the ease with which Google can delete a blog. I back up my blogs once per week on email and also on a network drive (independent of google).

Jacob, I just removed the Nav Bar on your advice.  To be honest, I have been considering this for a long time.  I hate it being there but, on the same token, since Blogger gives me free hosting I thought it was nice to give them some free advertising.  The site does look nicer with it being gone!  I do think there are ways to add trackbacks to your blogger blog as I've read about it a little, but I haven't played around with them yet (partially because I do not fully understand the concept yet).  I'll let you know if I ever figure it out.

Eric, you touched upon one of my biggest fears – being incorrectly categorized by Google as a spam blog!  I do a backup once a week.  Hopefully I never have to find out the process for quickly uploading to a new hosting site.  :)  Google/Blogger is extremely vague about what makes a blog a spam blog.  They allow advertising and they allow affiliates (hence their partnership with Amazon).  I think that most of the time sites get targeted because they are only ads/affiates and no real content.  However, I also think legitimate blogs sometimes can get targeting in their clean-up process… hence the reason backups are so vital.

Lisa, to back up a blogger blog, go to Settings, and then click on the Export Blog link.  To download the template (this is just the basic code, not any of the posts), go to Design, edit HTML, and click on the Export Template link.

Maggie, I am afraid I didn't get to look at your code in detail tonight.  Sorry!  When I get a little time to myself I will take a look.  I do see that from my end the favicon is still the Blogger one.  Can you send me the url of your favicon image (post it here) and I will send you some code for it?

I agree that having a picture on the background takes away from the content of the blog

Maggie… just took a peek and I like it.  I think you can change the blue sidebars, though with the blue background image I sort of like it.  Sometime soon I will set up a test blog to fool around with and when I do I will duplicate your design and see if I can't figure out the color change for you.

Single Saver, I came across this tutorial for improving SEO on Blogger.  It's a bit tedious, but even I can do most of it.  I think it's pretty helpful overall.  It helps with several of the issues on this thread.

I hope it helps others who are new to this as well.

It's at http://www.RudraGeek.com/2011/…..o-for.html

All the best!

Single Saver, I was able to do 3 out of the 6 fixes from the above All-In-One link.  I can't do the other 3 because I can't find the part of the html code that says <data:post.body/>  I've looked slowly & carefully over the html 3 times & can't find it.  Did Blogger change it to something similar?  I'm at a loss.

Thanks,

Maggie

Maggie, did you check the 'expand widgets' box?  If so and you still can't find it, look for something like posts.body or post-body.  There are a couple different versions of coding used in blogger templates so sometimes you have to tweet things a little.

Jacob, you're very welcome.  It seems pretty good & addresses the problems of Blogger & how to work around them.  It was written in Jan., 2011, so is pretty recent.

I was able to swap the name of the post with the blog name using this html.  The only problem I have now on my blog is that I can't seem to rearrange page elelments on the design page anymore.  It won't let me move them.  Hopefully it's a temporary glitch with Blogger & not a permanent situation due to the code I added.

Is anyone else having trouble rearranging page elements?  I didn't have any problems with this before I added the code.

Thanks, Single Saver, I will look for that!  When I'm looking at code I feel like a city slicker dropped into a thick jungle wading around hoping to see something that's not dangerous!  lol  As soon as I get my courage up I will try again while looking in there.

Hmmm… no, I am not having any trouble rearranging the widgets.  Did you save a copy of your template recently?  If so, you can reload it and see if that solves the problem (if it does, that means the cose you entered did something).  Or, just go in and delete the new line of code you added and see if that fixes things.
