I also put an ad block right at the top of a post.  However, what I did was install WhyDoWorkAdSense and set it to display the ads only on posts older than 5 days.  This way, when the post goes live, it is not encumbered by an a big block of advertising right when a reader clicks through to the article.  I think that since the most popular times a post is visited is the first couple days plus the day or two after publication on a carnival, so having the posts go ad-free for a little while is the best practice for catering to readers, while the SE traffic will usually start to show up around the time that the ads start appearing (at least in my mind, which more often than not when it comes to this type of stuff is usually wrong)
