Thank you guys for the great responses.
I love how passionate you guys are about the rankings. But please keep in mind we're not done tweaking the WiseScore yet. We're going to add several more metrics and functionalities in upcoming months that I think you'll be pleased with.
Advertisers and journalists are asking questions like:
– "Who in your chart represents [insert demographic here] and has good following on Twitter?"
– "Which blogger has personal experience with [brand X] and can talk to my editor today?"
– "Who are the top 10 bloggers with certified financial credentials?"
– "Who is an up-and-coming blogger that will be in the top 50 in a year?"
– "Who is easy to work with? (i.e. meet deadlines, keep confidential info, ethical about disclosure, etc.)"
We're working on ways to help answer those questions, by creating detailed surveys and measuring things like how easy you are to work with, and how popular you are among PF bloggers. That's where you guys really shine, and we want to highlight those aspects of your success! While Alexa, Feedburner, and Compete scores are a good start, they do not tell the complete story.
I've exchanged a few emails with Amy about the issue but haven't seen any changes to our listing.
This is entirely the fault of the Wise Bread management (including me) and not Amy's fault. She's a great kid (recent college grad) and hard worker! But unfortunately we've been loading too much work on her. For a while there she was probably doing the work of 2-3 people. Again, this is not an excuse. Just wanted to let you guys know it was my fault in not hiring more people sooner. All the recent growth is exciting, but it also means we're suddenly in a new position of having to manage and hire more people than ever before. So much for the myth about blogging being a solo pursuit.
Now that I've activated the Awareness API, hopefully it will do the trick!
Thanks Jackie! Your stat has been updated.
Will, I wanted to thank you for joining the forum
Thank you guys and Sam for giving me the opportunity Kay Lynn!
… wouldn't I go shut off my RSS information through the API that you were talking about, I'll shoot up again…. It seems that if you are looking for overall awesomeness you would force people to provide that info by giving them a ZERO for not reporting/participating….
That is a very sharp observation Evan.
You have pinpointed a problem we are trying to solve right now. There's a couple solutions:
Option 1: Current model of not counting the missing score and give no penalty. Like you pointed out, it may create a perverse incentive to hide stats.
Option 2: Give the missing stat a score of 0, thus penalizing the person for not having the stat (i.e. your suggestion). We seriously considered this option, but decided the current model is slightly better.
In the Peter and Jane example, under this model Jane would have an average score of 53 points. Which would be fair if she was gaming the system by avoiding the test, but seems unduly harsh if she really was sick that day.
Option 3: Not use Feedburner stat. About 70% of bloggers use Feedburner so this is not one of our favorite options.
Option 4: Figure out a better formula. We're certainly still looking for a better way to deal with missing stats. If you have any additional suggestions please let us know!
Like I mentioned earlier, most people using our chart are not focused only on the rankings. They have very specific questions about the bloggers listed, and the more stats you share, the more likely you are to get those opportunities.
Sure, a person can gain a couple of spots by removing their Feedburner and Twitter stat, but they'll end up shooting themselves in the foot. Every missing stat will hurt your ability to get opportunities. Editors are hiring bloggers for writing gigs because they think bloggers have loyal readers and great social media reach. They are not going to hire someone without a Feedburner/Twitter stat.
However, the Money Crashers' list picks it up, so I assume it's broadcasting correctly.
Thanks for the heads up Evan! I just checked out Money Crasher's Feedburner column, and it looks like they are using a different API to get the feedburner stats. We'll do some testing. If this other API is more stable, we'll definitely consider switching. We're using the direct API from feedburner itself, but ironically that doesn't always mean it is the best way to access the data.
I've activated the feedburner api. Now, I just have to wait for that and my Klout score to catch up and hope it has an impact!
Awesome Heather! Thank you so much for the activation.
I also wanted to let you know I had an issue recently which was resolved to my satisfaction.
That's good to know Barb. I appreciate you all being so patient with us during this beta period.
Letting bloggers update our own data will save time, money and complaints-brilliant.
Awww thanks for your kind words. I'll be sure to pass them along to Greg. He is quite brilliant (Google tried to recruit him last year). But I'll never tell him that to his face. Got to keep him humble and hungry.
I hope that doesn't sound like too much complaining.
Ha ha not at all Andy!
The day you stop giving us feedback is the day you stop caring about the chart. I'll always welcome your ideas!
