Do any of you use Wordpress Jetpack? I got a message on my dashboard today about WP future updates only being available if using Jetpack. Does using Jetpack effect your security? I read that it deals with the cloud.

Me neither hence the forum post. We can wait to see what the others say before we install it.

even if you don't use, if you use WP stats, then you have to start using jetpack. All future updates to WP stats will come via this. this is the info I got yesterday while updating wpstats. Haven't read the details though

Miss T, you mean all the wordpress core updates will come only via jetpack? I am not seeing that message in my dashboard so could find more info. I didn't see anything in the wordpress blog too…

The problem is when you go to download and install it it asks for permission to access your server etc. This is what made me nervous. I would love to hear the comments from those who have been using it for a while.

It sounded like it was only dealing with WP stats but I am not sure. If you find any more info let me know and I will do the same.

It looks like it is only for WP stats. That is deprecated and has been migrated to the Jetpack. I don't have Wp Stats (I already have 7 other stats so don't need one more :) ), so if you like WP Stats very might you might have to upgrade. In anycase Jetpack seems to be a legitimate plugin, so I guess it should be fine…

Yes, I do. I got rid of Wordpress Stats and installed jetpack. It is the same thing just with a few more options. I really didn't see a big difference. I figured i would upgrade now rather than wait for them to abandon Wordpress Stats altogether.

I got that message as well today – from WP Stats. I actually had Jetpack installed on KNS Financial a while back and it broke the site – I uninstalled it and haven't tried it again since then.

I've been using Jetpack since I switched to WP in July. At the time it seemed like it wasn't really a choice – there was a huge annoying banner reminding me to activate it so I finally gave in. Haven't noticed any problems or issues. Then again, as a WP noob, I'm probably not the best one to give an opinion! :)

I think a lot of bloggers use Jetpack to cut back on having multiple plugins. Thinkin' being, less plugins, less page load speed.
I tried it out briefly. Seemed secure at the time. But I wanted to work with my site outside of a packaged set of plugins so I switched things up. No complaints here, but I preferred a different set of plugins.

My understanding is that Jetpack is part of the core WP install now, and since it's developed by Automatic and it's connected directly to WP.com, I can't imagine that it wouldn't be secure.

I installed Jetpack after I had set my blog up, haven't noticed any issues/concerns with it. I did a fresh install of WP at the time (self hosted via 1&1) and it wasn't a part of the core download, but I did like a few of the features it offered. No issues that I've noticed though.

Thing is about |jetpack is that I don't want the other parts of the plugin. I may just drop WP stats entirely – not like its reliable.

I was thinking of doing the same. I never seem to get reliable stats from it and I too don't want the other parts. If not having it won't hurt my blog then I think I will also pass.

How does that compare to Google Analytics? I'm quite happy with GA right now, but haven't really explored the others?

GA is way better and much more accurate.

I would agree that GA is a preferred option. It's really the standard, as far as I know.
Anybody have a compelling reason as to why one should care about WP Stats when you already have GA? Just curious about what I might be missing.
