I have just been hit with the nice problem of being asked about banner advertising on my blog. Surprised I didn't anticipate any inerest just yet, so I have really thought about prices, terms etc.

My blog is about affiliate marketing (you can check it out from my signature). It gets around 300 visits per day. What would be a fair amount to charge, say for a months banner advertising? Any help will be very gratefully received fellow Yakezies!

Email someone about it directly.  Advertisers, search engines – they can all see the public forums and this topic should be conducted via email with a member you trust to give good advice.

If you search on this topic you will see this is a standard response to a frequently asked question.

I agree with SPF on this one. You should email directly for specifics.

However, here is some general advice on advertising. For a banner ad, you should at minimum charge enough to replace what that ad slot would currently make with a similar ad such as adsense or media.net. No need to sell yourself short and lose revenue.

Also, I would check the media kits of similar blogs either in subject or in terms of traffic to see if they have prices published. That can give you a good idea.

Another good proxy is a mass ad service like buyads.com. They will have information on CPM and traffic for the blogs they service.

I think it really depends on your demographic, target audience, other stats, etc. But definitely email somebody with a similar site directly. Congrats on advertising! It's awesome to be able to make money on something you love doing :)

Thanks for your help everyone. I have come up with a "ballpark figure" so we will see what happens when they respond. Just one more thing, well two actually. Is it customary to take payment in advance, and also is it usual to use something like Paypal to collect payment?

It really is your preference. If you are working with an ad rep, they usually have to get approval from their boss before they can submit for payment. In general with a service, until the service is performed, payment is not accepted.

I use Paypal and they have a great invoice feature that works really well once you are ready to receive payment. It's also a good way to keep track of the details of the agreement in the comments/memo section.

I almost always try to get payment in advance, but sometimes it's not possible and you have to just roll with it. I use paypal exclusively – Latisha is right, their invoice system is pretty great.

Thanks Latisha and Daisy! I will probably try and get payment up front if I can, but like you say will roll with it if it's not possible. I feel much more comfortable now with all this ad business, as it's brand new to me. Thanks again everyone! Smile
