I just wrote a 2,000+ word post last night, and it really sparked an energy in me for blogging again. I've been worn out with tax season, and jumping back into 15-20 hours a week of blogging after that seemed like a huge bummer. I wanted a long break, and was getting frustrated with writing. Last night, I finally decided to write about something that was exciting, our free vacation on credit card points. I wrote for about 2 hours, looked up and it was midnight, but I was so energized it didn't matter. I had finally fallen back in love with blogging!
I suggest you all give it a shot. At some point this month, shoot for a big, meaty 2,000+ word post to re-ignite your blogging passion and give your readers something to indulge in! And, as Sam has mentioned in the past, Whale posts are back in style for SEO and traffic, so the incentive is already there. So, go ahead, give it a shot. See if you don't feel 100% better about your blog writing about something you care about, and see how the readers respond. I bet they'll LOVE IT almost as much as you do :)
For those that are curious, here's the post:

I think whale posts can be demoralizing as well. I have written three different posts that weighed in at over 2000 words. I think that, combined, they've only received about 150 pageviews, which is less than my daily average traffic!

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I've found that a lot of times, big whale posts don't get fully appreciated until they get indexed by google and get traffic for people that are really looking for in depth information.

In last three weeks, I wrote two whale posts, one with 3600 words and this Monday's was 2700 words. The second one was mentioned by Wisebread today and from there it propagated to my yahoo front page for a short time.
Also the highest traffic post I have is of 2000+ words. So it's not always waste of effort and energy to write such posts.

I agree. Most of my top articles are all over 1,000 words. I think the more in-depth you go, the better.
In a non-scientific study I did for several keywords, all of the top 10 Google results were 750+ words in length.

Remember also that it can take time for a big post to gain traction. In weeks or even months down the line a big blog may find it and link to it, causing a surge in the SE rankings.

I wrote a couple of long posts last week, and they were both received poorly by my readers – they told me they were too lengthy and they didn't have the attention span for them….

Honestly. Nobody really wants to read 2000 words. Even some of the most popular blogs don't go over 1000.
However, I am happy you are energized.

I'm with Jai, I'm not really into reading 2000 words, but whatever energizes you! I recently wrote an entire, 1000+ word post about the quality of clothing that hasnt' been posted yet and it definitely gave me a spike in motivation.

Good job Jacob. The one thing that pumps me up about seeing meaty whale posts from the community is the exuding of EFFORT the posts demonstrates. I know how long it takes to format, write, and choose relevant pictures so I am immediately proud for those who put in the time. As the author, I'm sure you feel that pride in your work as well.
Effort requires no talent or skill! I may not read every word, but I'll at least skim it and think readers, dedicated or through search will appreciate it.
Fight on!

Thanks all! I don't necessarily think 2,000+ words should be every post, but if you have something worthwhile and can keep people hooked, it's definitely worth it. And if it's a topic YOU are passionate about, it doesn't take as much time, and can be super FUN! :)
I do recommend breaking up the post with pictures, because a big wall 'o text can be intimidating, and cause readers to skip over it.

Most of my blog posts are 1500 words plus with some over 3000 words. In fact I was told today by an expert that I break all the "unwritten" rules for blogging, but my traffic just set new records for April with over 42k pageviews and a couple of weeks back my blog http://www.theSarayiahpost.com squeezed into the top 10k websites in the UK for traffic. It is 20 months old.

If I might add, it's not the length, but the quality of the meat. I go to church every week, and it's a mystery to me how some sermons are hour long and they feel short and some sermons are 20 minutes long and it's the longest 20 minutes I had to bear. When I watch stand-up comedians, although they don't have a point, I don't know how they get their audience so engaged with what they have to say. I think its similar with a blog post.

What Peter said…..
I completely agree. I'm bored silly by some 2k posts and others I leave them wishing they had even more information. The key is engagement.

Yup and yup! It shouldn't read like a piece of tax legislation, it should be engaging, leaving the reader wanting more. Don't write just for the sake of length, but write lengthy for the sake of passion.
