That is so true. It is tough sometimes trying to decide between writing what you want to write and writing about topics that you think will rank high in the search engines. It is so much harder to write when you are writing just for SEO because you have to jam keywords in. I write what I want to write and then try to add SEO words in later if possible. It makes writing so much easier.

My sense is that since my site is so new right now that just writing for a longer period of time and letting my blog grow older will probably do more for my google rank than many other things.  I second those who say write based on what's interesting to you and helpful to your readers.
