I finally got the mega round up done – took me 12 hrs… Whew!!!

Here is the link if anyone is interested -

http://brokeprofessionals.com/…..ie-network

For this round up I visited EVERY one of the Yakezie members and challengers site. I have some comments if anyone cares :)

1) Thanks for all those who sent me you favorite link. I really appreciate it. I selected some other posts for my future round up to show my appreciation.

2) PLEASE PLEASE have an archive page. How do you think a new visitor is going to go through more than the top 5 posts that are in the front page? I can click the previous or next button but to be honest I didn't go beyond 5 previous pages.

3) PLEASE have a search functionality. If I am interested in searching for posts and see if you write on topics that interests me, a LOT of blogs didn't have an archive AND a search bar. How can new visitors see what you usually write?

4) A lot of people do have search bar and among these a good number of them have configured it to search the whole wide web!!!!! WHY? If i want a general google search I will go to google.com, configure your search bar to search "your" site…

5) Make sure you sidebars works fine in all browsers. A couple of sites had popular posts bar and a few of these didn't have archives or set up their google search properly, so I was relieved, but their sidebar links to popular posts all point to the main front page :(

I tried to balance out the number of saving tips for each category – grocery and saving money on gas seems to be the most covered topics :) understandble. But after I had a few of them even if you had a gas mileage saving tips post, I tried to look for your next popular saving money post. So in case some people are wondering why chose that particular post… That is why I asked to send me a post in the forum :)

I always wanted to compile a list like this for my own good. Hopefully this will be helpful to others. If I have missed any one let me know I will add.

And please consider setting up your search bar properly and have an archive, I don't think it will hurt in anyway AFAIK. What am I missing here? I am curious.

Thanks!

Very good points Suba! Thanks for putting this together. I think that since we all spend a great deal of time on each of our own sites, mistakes that are obvious to others can go unnoticed to us.

I just realized that I never set up search or archives for my new site (although, I do have a category list). I'll make those change when I get home.

Thanks for listing out ways that we can improve our sites!

I have always felt that way…let people have access to you. I thought having search site and archives would be helpful. I am glad that it worked for you too.

Oh my gosh Suba, absolutely great job and great points.  What a great post for everyone to reference!

I went to share the post, but there are not any socializing icons I can find.  I still shared, but it is a little harder without the buttons.  Or maybe I am just blind?

Thanks everyone. I had the social media buttons but that was one of the plugins I disabled when the site started looking funny after the new wordpress update. I will have to go through the plugins and see which one is the problem. I am in the middle of moving hosts so I can't do before settling in.

@Kris, thanks for sharing. Sorry about making it harder. I will get it restored as soon as I can.

Thanks!

If you want to search a site that doesn't have a search bar you can do so through Google.

For example, the search "yakezie site:tightfistedmiser.com" will return pages about Yakezie but only from my site tightfistedmiser.com.  It is a little more trouble than using a search form on a site but it is handy when the site doesn't have one for you to use.  I would still recommend people include a search function on their site.

I actually have a custom google search for yakezie (including member and challenger sites)

http://www.wealthinformatics.com/yakezie

But for some reason a lot of the posts I found by visiting the blogs didn't show up in the search. So after a couple of hours of doing that, I dropped it and just started visiting the sites one by one in order. I know it doesn't make sense why a post that is there in the blog won't show up, but it didn't so I took the long route :) .

You did a great job. I hung my head in shame as I was missing the basics from my blog (search and archives), but I add them them.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I wasn't complaining Miss T, I was just highlighting how a new visitor would feel visiting our blogs. It is very difficult to get new visitors (for me) so I would do anything to keep them coming back again. And without making it super easy for them to know what I write about, they might just leave. I spend a lot of more time on a site trying to find things. But my husband and sister, they give the site like <30 secs to tell them why they should spend their time on this blog. I have seen they are the typical "new visitors". We put all the effort into content, I just wanted to make sure we give people a chance to find them easily too…

I had a great time visiting all the blogs, now I am subscribed to all of them too. So it was time well spent…
