Howdy y'all. I was just wondering, how do you manage your identity online? I originally posted with a pen name but after signing up for FINCON11 I decided to just use my real name since it was easier.
I find that the more and more I get involved, the more I feel at risk that my personal information is vulnerable. The other day my first/last name was posted in a blog post- which is fine since so many of us do it, but I sometimes worry that my information is too easily found.
I was shocked when I found out you could look up the address/full name of the owner of any particular domain at whois.net and was able to fix it.
How do you feel about using your full name? What are your concerns? How do you try and protect yourself and your privacy even if you blog with your real name? How do you manage your blogging life vs. your real life?

I don't reveal my name. My first name is fine but I don't really know who's out there and like to keep things kind of protected I guess.
I pay extra to GoDaddy for private registration services, which hides your information on a whois search.

I use private domain registration and I also have a PO Box so mail doesn't have to come to the house.

I don't broadcast my name or home address, but I don't go out of my way to hide it, either.

Interesting. We had planned a "reveal" on the weekend but perhaps we'll just do so a little more quietly.

Before The Modern Financial, I launched two previous blogs under a pen name. They simply didn't take off, I think largely due to the fact that I didn't feel a connection with those blogs. Then I started The Modern Financial under my real name. I'm definitely more careful with what I write now because it is easily linked back to me, but I prefer using my real name so I don't need to worry about remembering which alias I'm supposed to be at what time.
Like MoneyBeagle, I pay for the private registration and would recommend everyone do the same.

Im actually pretty open… when I first starting blogging I only revealed my first name, and a picture on my site…now privacy isnt as important to me. I find that being open with my identity has helped my traffic and interaction. For instance, word of mouth by friends and family, and my personal facebook account has helped me to grow traffic.

It's a tough question. As you can tell, on the public persona vs. private scale, I'm definitely on the private side. I publish a lot of personal information on my blog that I don't need my employer, potential thieves, or anyone else knowing. Plus, I know that at some point I'll say something stupid that will get picked up and attached to my name.
I think I have 3 readers who know me personally. This definitely hurts my readership because I could be sharing with over 200+ FB friends and 600+ LinkedIn contacts, but I don't. It's just not worth it to me when it's so easy for me to track down anyone I want via the web.
Perhaps I just have a dim view of humanity.

protect the whois – it costs something like 12 bucks for the year.
Notwithstanding, I couldn't imagine putting my full name out there…it would scare the shit out of me that everytime someone googled my name all my political views, and net worth updates would just be sitting there.

I've been up front from the very beginning. I don't think it's possible to talk about transparency the way I do and then not show my face or let people know my real name. One example is saying that I'm a QuickBooks ProAdvisor. How the heck would it look if I'm giving out advice and no one can verify my claim since they don't know what name to look up?
And, like some of the others, I use my corporate information as my address in the databases.

You never know who it out there reading, lurking, watching. I am always paranoid but I also believe that if anyone want to find you, they probably can do it. I use my pen name and feel comfortable with it.

I don't use my last name anywhere on my site, and people knowing my first name doesn't bother me. I thought I was doing enough to protect my identity. I don't have my site on FB and I've only given one person I know the name of my site. However, I am learning the hard way that if people want to find you, they will. And after the events of the last two days, I will definitely be more careful with what I write about.
I was unaware of the whois blocker and will be purchasing that today.

Well I definitely have my full name out there. However, I protect my site with private registration and I also have a P.O. box for mail and a personal EIN if I need to send an advertiser a W-9.
Really these days, anyone could find out who you are and where you live just by doing a little research so the best thing to do is just to do the most you can to protect yourself.
I don't share much 'personal finance' on my site though. It's mostly evergreen 'how-to' type posts. I share my portfolio with newsletter subscribers but never the market value, just percentages.

Since I am semi anonymous, I guess I am vulnerable. I don't think I reveal anything really personal that I feel concerned.

I recently stumbled into the home address of a blogger. I can't remember what I was searching for but I was trying to find something about their blog and found a site that listed their home address. The blogger had aparently given the company his address for some review and then they had it in a word document accessible on their site to google search. So google picked up the document and advertised his home address to the world. Good reason to use a PO box if you need to give out an address.
I don't think we need to be paranoid, but better safe than sorry.
I post anonymously mainly cause of some of the stuff I'm talking about and I try to be very careful about revealing specifics about my identity or anything.
I use just a first name to identify myself.
I use private domain name registration.
I never say what city I live in. I rarely if ever say what state I live in.
I had to setup Paypal with a separate account that didn't use my real name.
I setup seperate Facebook and Twitter accounts using synonyms. eg. I have a Facebook with the name 'John Smith' or something like that just so I can setup my FAcebook page.
There is a cost to anonymity.
I think that people relate to a name and a face better than a anonymous person.
I turned down writing at US News blogs cause they wanted a real name. :(

I went full on exposed after I quit my day job. I've since gotten a PO Box and a Google Voice number to put on things that may publicly show like MailChimp campaigns, but I am sure I am easy to find. So, if you are a Crystal stalker and decide to come after me, please keep in mind that I live in Texas…we like guns.

Humour? The sting of carbonation still ringing in my nose? both?
That being said, I live in Canada. A lot of guns per capita up here too.

@ Crystal, hahaha!
I too only use my first name for most things and pay extra for the privacy through my webhost. I figure I take some measures, but it's not perfect.
