502 Bad Gateway Connections

Hi Folks,

Anybody know why there will be a sudden 502 Bad Gateway error notification on a site? When Yakezie.com or FS go down it'll always say "Error Establishing Database Connection."

Today had the 502 Bad Gateway error. What causes this and any other solutions? I recently used WP Optimize.

What do the mega sites with millions of pageviews a month do? Multiple dedicated servers?

Thanks,

Sam

A 502 error is usually a communication error between a web ISP and a server. I would talk to your host about it.

Error Establishing Database Connection is an error between your Wordpress Database and Wordpress. Lots of things can cause it. Anything from bad plugins to a server performance issue.

Eric, would it be fair to say that the 502 error blame is therefore more on the iSP?

Thx

Not necessarily. I would try it on 2 (maybe phone and computer) and see if the issue comes up with both. If it does, it is more likely a hosting problem.

Either way, it is an error and shouldn't happen. All hosts should communicate correctly with all users. One expert said:

it's mostly beyond your control. A 502 usually indicates there's something wrong with a website's server, or the way a website's servers communicate with each other. Another reason is also because there's something wrong with your service provider.

It could be something caused by a php file in your installation, but more likely it is something your host needs to work out.

Gotcha Eric.  I think it's a 90%++ chance a 502 Gateway error is with the host.  When I called InMotion, they said they had a technician on it already, which never happens.  Meaning, they recognized an internal problem and need to fix it.

How often does your site go down a month or year you think?

Sam, I use pingdom to monitor website uptime and alert me of any downtime.  It's free, which is great.

My site usually has a 30 minute outage every 2-3 months for maintenance, but otherwise I'm up.

Robert, I use pingdom as well.  Good to know you have 30 minute outages 2-3X a month as well.  These are not planned outages right?  I think I'm about the same as you.  2-3X a month for 30min-1hour downtime on average.

It seems like an inevitability no?  I'd like for the website error message to say "Down For Temporary Maintenance.  Please Check Back in 45 Minutes."  instead of Error Establishing Database Connection, etc.  Possible?

Regards,

Sam

Talking with our IT guy, he said the 502 error is an ERROR with / on the server itself… Unless you are seeing it on every site you try to visit, then it is a problem on your or your isp's end….

Also there would be no way to create a custom page for the site if the server is truly going down without having a "failover" server to back it up, at which point it would just roll over to that copy of the site…

We are on a dedicated server, our down time has been maybe 1 per year… all updates are typically run late at night (or can be done in place) to help avoid disruption in service….

If you have any questions I can pass along my IT guys info to you…
