So I updated some plugins just now and I can't see my site or wordpress admin.

My last backup was Apr 17.  Am I screwed?  Is there anything I can do to get our site back?

I bet those were breathless moments! Glad you got it back up! I just visited and it looked good as usual.

I try to back up my blog every week. I normally forget but have an auto reminder on my Outlook calendar that whips me in to shape!

Backing up is huge!  I had something similar happen last week but all is fine.  Just reminds you the importance of backing up?

Do you have any back-up plug-ins that you highly recommend?  Mine can be fussy with certain updates, which worries me!

I do it manually by downloading the .xml version of my site. I'm not sure how you do it with Wordpress though.

I back it up on Amazon S3. I have put a lot of effort into my blog and I don't want to lose it, the S3 seemed like the best investment to protect the time & effort. So far I have not spent even a penny, my blog is not big enough to exceed the amazon storage space/bandwidth for the free tire. I use a plugin to automatically back up everything, everyweek. I download them manually as well, but I am not as disciplined as the plugin. I still do it at least ever other week, but to be honest I am really counting on my S3 back up to save the day.

The .xml format is the default export/download option in Blogger.

Automatic Wordpress backup

I like this over some other ones I tried because 1) I can set up automatic back ups daily/weekly/monthly. 2) It backs up everything including my .htacess file and config files, not just the database and theme files 3) It provides a way to delete old back up files automatically, I download old backup files to my local external harddrive and delete it from S3, just to make sure I am still under the free limit. 4) I have not used this feature, but it has a restore from latest backup option. The idea is a one click restore and I like to have that option.

Only problem is your server has to be linux based (most servers are).

That had to be a big scare. I had one of those back in Feb, but hostgator(who I use for hosting) keeps backups of your site,a dn updates the backup every sunday. The just restored the site me(free of charge) which should have cost me $15. Which still is a small payment for my brainchild lol . – Gene

I've been having trouble with WP Back-up, so I installed Automatic Wordpress Back-Up (which Suba recommended).  Still couldn't get it to back-up.

Anyone have any thoughts?

who is your hosting provider? I know hostgators c-panel has a tool that you can use to back-up and do automatic backups, and in the need that you need to restore your site they will do it for free.

I have PowWeb and have done manual back-ups.  I want a plug-in to automate it for me so I don't forget.  WP-Backup used to, but it stopped working with the second-to-last WordPress Update.

I use to use WP-Backup and wordpress backup by Blog Traffic (you have to use them together as one, backs up your posts the other backsup your database). A few months ago those free version plugins couldn't handle the size of our backups anymore. We went to BackUp Buddy which is a great tool.

It is a premium plugin but a very well coded and easy to use plugin. Really happy with it

I've just decided that i'll do my manual backup whenever I update a plugin, WP version or the theme updates.

Lesson learned.

Sounds like people have had issues w/ the plugins so I don't want to blindly rely on those.

Sounds like quite a scare, there.  I'm glad you figured everything out without a major ordeal.  Also, thanks for inspiring a conversation that mentions so many ways to back up your data.  I'll have to see if I can (should) supplement my current, fairly limited back-up plans.
