It seems that some people have twitter automated (like retweets, posting things from the 'archive', etc.) Yet, I have no idea how this is done and even after a few google searches / and searching the forum, I have not found anything that can help me.
Is there a service that I am missing out on that I can set up to retweet certain people's tweets or automatically tweet some of my old posts (that doesn't charge money?)??
Thanks for your help.

The easiest way is to set up a twitterfeed account. I use it to auto-tweet each of my posts to twitter and facebook. It also works to auto retweet other people's tweets or posts.

Also check out Twaitter (soon to be renamed Gremln). It's free.
You can schedule your tweets in advance. A real time saver.

There is a really popluar new app called Buffer that allows you to schedule (and supposedly optimize) your tweets. Hootsuite also lets you set up a calendar for tweets and will send them out at predetermined times. For older posts, there's a WP plugin called tweet old posts that will tweet out, well old posts based on how much time has gone by since their publication automatically. You can set it to lead with "From the archives" or "Blast from the past" or whatever you'd like to preface the tweet with

When I post something, I have Feedburner set up to tweet it automatically. I don't tweet old posts, though, because I'm always disappointed when I click through someone else's tweets and find a 2 year old post or something.

I have the same thing setup as as Andrea. The whole 'old post' thing is funny to me as you see a lot of people not taking the time to set it properly and have posts from Black Friday or an event that happened in the summer filling up twitter streams.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I guess I will need to decide if I want to tweet my old posts. It seems like it would generate some extra traffic, but I don't want to make anyone mad. Either way, this is very helpful.

I use the WP plugin Tweet Old Posts. You can fully customize it so that you are not tweeting posts that have been around for years. You can set the min and max age of a post in days, and you can select to omit posts from certain categories. Think about all of the great older posts that you have written that no longer get any traffic at all. It is a shame, and you should bring them to the attention of your newer readers who didn't get them the first time around. If it really bugs you, take your dates off your posts. A lot of the bigger, older PF blogs do that so when you land on a page, you aren't immediately turned off by a date from 2007 even though the content is still relevant.
There are also a few great paid programs that you can use to. If you are serious and have multiple Twitter accounts, it is well worth the investment.

Been using HootSuite for a few weeks now and love it. You can schedule tweets as well as Facebook messages (and more).

I use Twuffer to schedule tweets.
It's perfect when you want to RT posts from others but don't want to do it all at once. I usually spread them out over a few days a couple of hours at a time.

+1 for Tweet Old Posts, I'm pretty happy with it, although it does seem to favour some posts more than others.ccI like that you can tell it not to tweet certain posts though. I also shoot out new posts using Feedburner, works just fine for me.
