I am not help desk either :) but here goes. The Avatar that shows up on your comments to a post is pulled from Gravatar.com. The avatar that shows up in here is pulled in the following order

1) Gravatar.com

2) whatever you uploaded here

3) forum avatars

So if you are trying to upload one here and not seeing the change, that would be because the gravatar takes a priority. If you are trying to upload to gravatar and not seeing it here… then I have no idea what is wrong.
