Aweber Lightbox Settings and general advice on email sign up forms

Hi guys. I'm learning how to use Aweber's Lightbox email sign up forms and have some questions. If you have any advice or insight on my questions please share!

I tried sending an email to Aweber but their help ticket forms aren't working tonight, go figure, so I'm waiting for them to reopen and to fix that

1) What type of email sign up forms have worked the best for you? Lightbox, pop over, pop up, side bar, bottom of post, etc? For anyone using lightbox and pop over – do you use a delay? What about frequency?

2) Lightbox sign up form frequency – any idea how Aweber determine if a user has already seen a form to then start the frequency count? Is it based on IP address or does it use cookies?

3) If a user signs up from the lightbox, will they still continue to see the lightbox based on the form recurrence frequency? Or is there a way for the system not to show active subscribers the lightbox again after they sign up?

4) Anyone used Aweber's split test feature for sign up forms? I created a split test but I'm not sure how to publish it. I think it just involves taking the split test code and putting that in the wp_footer, but I'm not 100% sure I don't have to also put the code for the forms I'm split testing in the footer as well.

thanks!

Hi Sydney,

Call aweber! I call them all the time for all questions. You get through fast and the answers are always helpful. BTW, what is a "lightbox" form? I just use the standard forms.

Hi Barb! I meant to call them in the morning but got sidetracked and being on the West coast, by the time I got home from work they were already closed lol. I sent them an email tonight though and expect to get a response tomorrow. They've been pretty fast over email in the past.

As for a lightbox, it's a type of sign up form that's kinda like a pop up but it's technically not – in that it doesn't open in a separate browser window.  A lightbox is a form that will hover above/appear on top of a webpage and is programmed to darken the background area surrounding the form while the sign up form is visable. So the form is "lit up" while the webpage is temporarily dimmed/darkened behind it so the readers focus is directed to the sign up form. And then once the lightbox is closed out by the user, the webpage goes back to its normal color/brightness. Sam is using one on financialsamurai that you can see as an example when you visit his homepage.

The cool thing about a lightbox is that you can program a delay on when it appears – a lot of websites seem to have theirs on instant, but others have a delay of 10, 20, 30 seconds, etc. And you can also choose the frequency of how often a user sees the form – every time they visit a page, every 2 days, every 10 days, etc. So I'm trying to find out more about the logistics behind Aweber's lightbox functionality.

I'll let you know what I find out!

Ok so I heard back from Aweber. For those of you who are curious, here's their feedback:

"The frequency display of a sign up form is cookies based on a browser and not based on subscriber's IP address. With a frequency set for a form to appear every X days, it will still appear every X days even if a subscriber is signed up. There would not be an option to recognize the subscriber is already on your list and have the form to not appear for them after they've signed up on the form. It is a good suggestion and I will pass the suggestion along to our development team as a suggestion for future implementations of the system.

Based on your split test question, you would need to remove the javascript for your existing lightbox form and replace it with the split text javascript code provided."

Thanks

Thanks so much Sydney. I've noticed these lightboxes popping up on sites I visit. They don't seem too intrusive. Are you going to implement one?

You know I really should! I finally sent out a newsletter for the first time in 2 years (ack! so embarrassing it's been that long) and I really should get back into it and build my list further. I also need to build my RSS email list too.
