Blacklists might not be ideal unless the IP originates in Russia or a place like that where you can be more certain it's probably the hackers — otherwise, might just be someone else with a hacked PC or someone running a Tor exit node or something.
Good point. With this in mind yesterday, I did a little experiment. I turned off my Akismet and AVH and only left on GASP just to make sure there weren't legit commenters getting missed. By morning I had over 50 spam comments. I am convinced these types of plugins work. For the odd blogger that has had an issue I have added them to my IP white list.

The easiest gateways for viruses that I've seen are MSN and Internet Explorer. So guys, if you don't need to use them… please don't! Chrome & Firefox are more secure, and you can use Gtalk from a web browser. Viruses on Windows are an unfortunate occurence but you can minimize your attack surface a great deal simply by tossing IE or at least making sure you're running the latest version.
I agree. IE has it;s issues. I much prefer Chrome or Firefox. However for some reason at work I can only use IE to get onto the forum. Don't ask me why. At home, Chrome works fine. Very strange. Needless to say I am stuck using IE which I don't like.
I would also suggest going with a private host. I have a private host and have never once had an issue in almost two years. They are usually similar rates to the big guys and offer a good plan. I get backups, technical support, a mirror server in case the main server goes down, and any help I need with the blog (since I know nothing).

I personally use Typepad Antispam + Conditional Captcha and I only get about 2 to 5 spammish comments per week — people that bother to fill out the captcha, I guess. I check the trash every now and then for false positives, but I've only found one in the last year.
Akismet I hate with a passion… and with Intense Debate it's worse. It lies to you and says your comment was published, and even sends you a subscription email! However, your comment is actually in the spam.

Oh, I do use Bad Behavior as well but turned it off for the contact page. A decent plugin but unfortunately does not seem to be updated too often. I really liked Spam Karma 2 back in the day as well.

Can you share what the problem was so we can keep a look out for it?

Hi guys, there was a malware that got in to a lot of GoDaddy hosted sites. I can dig up the name if you want more details. My web guy at blogcrafted said that as far as he could tell, GoDaddy sites were hit predomnantly. Go Daddy got rid of it, then I had my web guy reinstal my google tracking code and resubmit my site to google.
Remedies,
change passwords regularly
keep up to date with wordpress patches and updates
update your plug ins regularly.
let me know if you want more info
Barb

I'm glad to hear things are getting back to normal, Barb! I remember this isn't the first time, but let's hope that it's the last!
