Just read this article that says Google will now be punishing (sandboxing???) sites that display too many ads "above the fold."

More info on Google's official search blog:

I don't think I've seen any Yakezie member or challenger sites that would be affected by this, but just in case you run affiliate sites, niche marketing sites.

I think that's great.  There are too many sites out there that show up high on searches, but when you click through, you see a bunch of ads and other junk and have the content hidden in between.  This was, I'm hoping, real content pages will get better placement, while still being able to display ads in a smart manner.  Of course, the risk is still there for some sites that do provide great content to be penalized because the also display lots of ads up top, which could get pretty dicey, especially if they have to re-design the sites.

I still think the largest loss is indirect – I won't share pages that are over-loaded with ads above the fold on Twitter, Facebook, etc.  JMO.

I think it all works toward the same end JT.  Bottom line is more real pages will be popularized while the BS pages will be dropped making it easier to both find relevant info and be found as a source of relevant info in searches.

Eric, your thinking is the same as mine. The better Google gets at detecting garbage, the better it is for people like The Yakezie who create good content while monetizing smartly.

The best part of the article is when the author put Google on the spot for violating their own rule by placing a ton of ads above their fold.

Thanks John. Yeah, I went thru the pages you referred to. I watched the video too. It's a good move from the Google, especially for the visitors. But Google has not specified how much ads is too much.. moreover, the placement of Google Adsense  ads (as shared in the video) is a bit contrasting with that of the recent update. (watch video ) . Anyway, good info by the way..

PS: Moreover, I am unable to use this http://browsersize.googlelabs.com/, actually can't understand things..

Toss me on team 'good move'.  I do have ads above the fold, but on a personal level I'm less inclined to read (and yes, share) articles where there are too many ads high on the page.

I think you are safe as long as you use common sense and don't make the ads overpower the content.  It is pretty hypocritical of Google to target this though.  On some searches there are more ads than results on a page.

Getting penalized definitely isn't fun.  So do what you can to jump through the vague hoops that they throw out there.

Hey guys, the one thing I recommend is to not get caught up in what Google says or does. Their real targets are just unreadable link farm blogs that just have garble. I've seen them, and I'm amazed!

Just focus on the writing and networking and I think everything will take care of itself.

Yes, Sam I agree with you. Google or any search engines may not punish a blog/site if it has ads above the fold; instead, those bad neighborhood links, not relevant to the content, sometimes hidden somewhere in the blog are the culprits and Google just wants to catch them and punish them
