My friend just started a blog today about her daughter's health problems. When she published her first post, it had that ugly "/?p=123" permalink. I told her to change it to"/%postname%/".
Unfortunately, WordPress is giving a 404 error for every permalink other than the default. I expected this with her first post, since it was already published, but it's also happening with new posts. She has /%postname%/ as the preferred URL, and that's what goes at the end of her new posts.
However, she is still getting the 404 error on her new posts. The only thing that fixes it is changing the preferred URL back to the default! I tried to use Deans Permalink Migration plugin – http://www.deanlee.cn/wordpres…..on-plugin/ – but as you can see, it doesn't handle redirects from the default structure too well.
Here is the website: http://tianasodyssey.com/
Any suggestions?

Probably a dumb question, but is she changing this under her theme or under Settings > Permalinks? When I tried to change mine in my theme options, it wouldn't work.
Is she running any caching plugins that might be interfering?
I have no idea; I'll let someone smarter come along who might actually be of help. ;)

That's not a dumb question at all. We went under Settings>Permalinks, and changed it to custom. She had no active plugins at the time (I just added one that helps with navigation), so it shouldn't be a cache problem.
I have never seen this happen before, and I have changed the structure on all of my websites!

I changed my structure after about 1.5 months. I used the plugin Dean's Permalinks Migration plugin to retain the links from external sites to my new structure. Give it a shot!

I used it on her site, but it didn't work.
I actually use it on KNS Financial and it worked perfectly. Since she only has two posts, she is willing to start over. The problem is that WordPress is not recognizing the new permalink structure. I published a test post with the new permalink, and we got a 404 error when it clicked on the link from the home page (or hit the "view post" link from the dashboard).
It's the craziest thing…

I'm no WP expert, but if I think of anything that might help, i'll post or email you.
What theme is she using?

Her theme is called "Pink and Purple". I never thought about it being a problem with the theme. Let me change it to something else and see if that helps!
Thanks!

I just changed the theme to Twenty Eleven (the WP default theme), and it still doesn't work. Here is what I just posted: http://tianasodyssey.com/test/ – gives me a 404 error, http://tianasodyssey.com/?p=47 (the same post) works.

She might want to create a .htaccess file and do a mod-rewrite enable, otherwise it won't be able to rewrite it to pretty url.
http://codex.wordpress.org/Usi…..Permalinks
So basically you would have to create .htaccess file and enable mod_rewrite. As she has only 2 posts, the easiest thing might be to copy your file and see if that works (Remove anything specific to your blog ofcourse). You can access the .htaccess file from your host control panel. It should be in the root of your folders.
(Shoot me an email if you need help)

I am not seeing a new theme 2011 theme, I am seeing the old pink theme. Do you have cache enabled? You might want to disable that until you fix this… just a possibility…

It was 9+ months ago I made the change. I do recall have to delve into my .htaccess file way back then

I am definitely going to have to email you, because I didn't understand much of the directions in that article. I know that I never did anything like that for either of my sites, so I don't know if copying my file would work.
I'll probably email you on Saturday, because I don't have access to her control panel right now, only her WP dashboard.
As for the theme, I changed it back once I realized that it didn't help. I changed it back to Twenty Eleven now.

No problem Khaleef. It should be simple enough (unless it clashes with the theme).
