Has anyone converted an ebook to be sold with Kindle before? I uploaded my book in both Word and PDF format and it got all jumbled and the pictures look bad. They use HTML formatting. Anyone used any easy services or tools to convert your book to look nice in HTML format?

Yes, I published two books on Kindle (while I was not blogging I was writing!). It is easy to do but requires a lot of formatting. I used two free softwares that you help to do the conversion and preview your book as a final product. I cannot tell you right now its names but tonight I will look it up and let you know. Email me if you have any specific questions.

Okay I checked what I used and what I did:

1. I did not use HTML because it was much easier to conver the Word file.

2. I used Mobipocket (http://www.mobipocket.com/en/D…..reator.asp) to create an ebook file and Kindle Previewer (http://www.softpedia.com/get/O…..ewer.shtml) to see how it will look after it is uploaded on Kindle.

3. Are you following ALL the formatting requirements such as : no paragraph, no spacing and so on? KDP has very detailed instruction how to format a book. I followed every step and it all worked out.

4. This forum was very helpful to ask formatting questions: http://forums.kindledirectpublishing.com.

When I converted mine to Kindle, I ended up using the smashwords guide so that I could upload it there as well (gets you into some other markets like kobo, nook, and apple) and then just made the necessary text changes and uploaded to KDP.

Here's the link to the guide:

I don't think I've even sold a copy of mine. But, I give it away for free on my site, so it's at a bit of a price disadvantage on amazon. Maybe I'll see if I can get them to drop the price some…

Good resources. Thanks everyone.

I did upload both my Word and PDF file and it was really ugly.

How much time and learning curve was involved in the translation/formatting?

I don't recall exactly, but if I had to estimate, I'd say it took me about 3 hours of work to get it so that it was acceptable for Kindle.  There's still some changes that will need to be made for it to get accepted into the nook and apple stores, but overall, it wasn't too bad.  Keep in mind, however, that I'm a tech-geek, so most of this stuff comes pretty second nature to me.  For someone without that leaning, it might take significantly longer to digest the info and make the changes.

To answer the question about sales: since July I sold 23 copies. But I write fiction. I think fiction sells better than non-fiction. It also depends on a topic.
