Hi Folks,
Have a moral dilemma for you:
* Would you allow a scraper site to continue scraping all your content for their benefit every day so that when you file a cease & desist and penalties complaint you can really bring down the hammer?
I was speaking to my copyright lawyer over a beer and he mentioned that if you can nail a site that has been plagiarizing massive amounts of content for a long period of time, it's simply much more worth it my time, and the windfall is that much greater.
Contact them now, or contact them later to drop the sledge hammer?
* Another thing I read is a curious thing about scraper sites. Since they copy everything I write verbatim, they also have my do follow links I link to relevant, internal content. Hence, the scraper site itself is linking back to all my content, which theoretically is a positive from a search engine standpoint.
So long as one's original content gets picked up first by the search engines rather than the scraper sites, wouldn't it behoove you to have lots of scraper sites that rank on the 2nd page or later on Google all linking back to your own work?
Fun topic of making lemonade out of lemons yeah?
Thanks,
Sam

I just kill them on day 1 with a DMCA violation email to their hosts. I have it as a "canned response" on Gmail, and it takes me about 3-5 minutes per site when they pop up.

You do have a good point. All your deep links, and any affiliate links will also be published, so its not all bad. I also notice that those that are lazy enough to just scrape content, are also too lazy to do any real promotion of their site, so they are very unlikely to out rank you. It's usually not worth sweating over.

Ironic, isn't it? You almost want a really good ranked scraper site that obviously comes up at least a page after you in search to continue their scraping!

Long version if you don't always know if someone is stealing your content: http://thecollegeinvestor.com/…..r-content/
Short version Step by step:
1. Find out their hosting company using Whois (SEO Toolbar has this built in, or go to http://www.networksolutions.co…..ois-search)
2. If you want to be nice, contact the site administrator first, give them a chance to remove the offending content
3. If you don't want to be nice, contact the host directly (most hosting companies have either a legal, DMCA, or administrative contact specifically for these issues)
4. If you want to be awful to them and make this very hard going forward, report the site to AdSense first, and wait for them to act prior to contacting the host (http://support.google.com/bin/…..pe=lr_dmca). By reporting it to Adsense, they will be permanently banned from Adsense and will even have problems opening another account under different names
5. Send in the letter using the template on my site about (Make sure that you fill in every blank, as that is required by law)
Your problems will be eliminated within 24-48 hours on average!

I have read that the deep linking found within your content is actually a positive thing. But there was a point made to use some Google magic to verify that you are the author of the original content, which prevents your site from being slammed by Google for duplicate content. If I can find the links where I read that I will post them.

Wow, I have never thought of this scenario. I will have to keep a look out for this as I continue to grow. Good luck Sam in bringing down the hammer, or shall I say, Katana?

Probably nobody is scraping my sites, but if they do, I don't worry about it.
After a new post is published, I quickly Google +1 it to make absolutely clear that they have it.
Links in every post back to my site are copied as well (however this is a good reminder not to trust just on Alinks and to code at leas one internal link directly in the post as well).
If in the the end I would be able to get a nice amount of money from a scraper, that would be great and considered a bonus.

I'm with Van on this one. Unless my understanding of screen-scraper technology is off, meta information in the header isn't copied. Just put rel=conanical tags in your header so Google knows that your page is the original for any duplicates of the content it may find.
I'm not 100% on the law, but I would think that knowing of an infringement and not acting on it could be construed as approval/permission and if you later sued, could be used against you

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I know this sounds odd, but I've never had to deal with anyone who plagiarized my work. The last time it happened one of my readers read them the riot act and they took it down. So I really appreciate these tips. Thank you!

Thanks for your outline College Investor. I was able to get one real annoying scraper removed recently.
Another thing to keep in mind is if they are copying your images that you have uploaded to your server then they are stealing your bandwidth.

Great call out! I recently had that happen with an image I had hosted on my CDN! It was costing me money. You can fix tat with changes to your htacess file.

Wow, I have just ignored the few that I've caught. But, you've certainly given me something to think about as well as a remedy.
Thanks for all the comments.
