Starting this week, I have been getting a lot of spam comments from yahoo.com, google.com, bing.com, and facebook.com and leaving short one sentence comment.  Does anyone know why?  Do you know if these visitors are actually visiting my website and leaving this strange comments?  Right now, I go into spam folder and just delete them one by one but is there a better way to deal with this issue?  Thanks for your help!

I think you got recent PR upgrade. Its nothing but "SEO Experts" checking out if your comment filter is turned off. If you let one in then you'll receive a barrage of genuine backlink creating spams. Till you had no PR no one wanted to create a link on your blog, now since you are PR1, backlinks from your blog has value.

I think most of us who got PR upgrade are seeing an increase spam numbers. It's natural in the SEO world, we have to live with it. If its too much to check in spam folders then apply captcha.

install GASP plugin.  problem solved.

i've been advocating this alternative to askiment for a long time. It works, its easy – check out my site for the lil' check box that confirms you're not a spammer.

I get VERY little spam – maybe 10 a month?

Completely agree. Most of this spam is from robots, and GASP blocks out all the robots, so the spammers will have to do things by hand.

I've seen GASP all over the place so I figure it has to work.  I usually miss the box at least 33% of the time just by not looking completely :)

GASP is good, no doubt. Don't you think GASP is very easy to crack? It only takes a couple of lines of extra code in the blaster script to tick a checkbox.

People would do that if GASP is used at large. Or am I missing something?

I tried GASP and still got lots of spam.  Right now I'm using a combination of Askimet, GASP, and Conditional Captcha and that seems to keep the spam down to about 10 a day.  I'd like to use less plugins but before using all three of these I was getting pages of spam comments every day.

I had this problem a while back – people suggest to install GASP and I did, unfortunately that didnt stop mine.
I now have GASP installed, as well as "conditional capcha", and those two in tandem have basically gotten rid of the issue

Thanks everyone for your help.  I will install GASP immediately.  I saw this on many blogs but did not know what it was called.

I've never used Akismet really.

I use the WP-Spam Free plugin and it works great! Probably along the same lines as what everyone else is talking about, but I never even have to moderate comments with it.

Akismet works fine. It does not matter why you are getting comment spammed or whether the spamming process is manual or automated. All it is garbage, and the objective should be to spend as little time on it as possible. I used to scan Askimet's spam file for legitimate comments, but found that its screening was pretty faultless. Now, when I see a couple hundred spam messages a day, I just empty it without looking.

By the way, most of this comment spamming is probably automated. Your site is just another entry in a spammer's database. These spammers never seem to check whether their spam comments actually get posted. That would be real work and take their time. Instead they just set it up and press the button and the garbage flows in endlessly.

Askimet sends all of my spam into a spam folder. I just check and delete. I think one or two of the 100 of spam were real comments.

I had the same problem… I installed this plugin and stopped it at once:

Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin

Very simple plugin that adds a checkbox to the comment form requesting that the user clicks it to prove they are not a spammer. Bots wont see it so their spam comment will be discarded.
