I had the same problem… I installed this plugin and stopped it at once:
Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin
Very simple plugin that adds a checkbox to the comment form requesting that the user clicks it to prove they are not a spammer. Bots wont see it so their spam comment will be discarded.
Growmap is one of the plugins I mentioned in the post. The post goes a step further though and talks about something you can add to your .htaccess file in order to stop a lot of the spammers dead in their tracks. I had growmap, but my problems didn't stop completely until i added that code to my .htaccess file.

Be aware that some of the anti-spam tools you use also affect non-spammers. My comments end up on a regular basis in the spam-corner since I am commenting from Thailand.
On my own sites I use now Disqus for comments. This works well for me.
Before that I got lots of spam. I left one site too unprotected for a few months and did not look after it. Then I found something like 18,000 spam comments.

I have just installed and activated GASP but there doesn't as yet appear to be any difference. Does it only apply to new posts I make now that it is installed?

Thank you guys, I'm going to try this. Once I dropped below 500k my spam situation was getting ridiculous. We'll see if this works, but if you can't comment on my site for any reason, please let me know.

I commented on "make the life you want" and it works fine. "Sometimes it is not entertainment" is a really beautiful article I think.
Note that you do not have any permalinks for your URLs installed on that blog. Is that on purpose?

I started getting 10 spams an hour recently. In a way I hope that means my site is starting to become a real site, ha ha. I activated the plugin and it was not there at first. I had to log out and then I could see the little check box. I hope this works. Thanks for the plugin guys.

I was always wondering what the plugin was to add that little checkbox to the commenting process. I have used Akismet so far, without too much trouble. I probably get an average of 5 spam comments a day maximum. Occasionally, Akismet labels some legitimate comments as spam, so I look through quickly before deleting everything.

Everyone,
Thanks for the GASP plugin. My spam was starting to give me an ulcer. Now, I feel much better. :)

When I first starting getting spam I was excited, it meant to me that my blog was doing well enough that spammers thought it was worth their time to spam! Lol, so congratulations on having a meaningful web presence. I use that askimet plugin which catches them and so once a week I go thorugh and delete them all (pulling out the 1 or 2 good ones that in there)… I don't know what else to do.

I don't have a huge spam problem, most of it gets caught thankfully, I had the spamfree plugin, but it ate some real comments so I disabled it again, I hate hate hate captchas, just installed GASP. Hopefully it works for me :)

I use AKISMET with Conditional CAPTCHA. Always works well for me and never get any complaints. Only a CAPTCHA if someone is marked by AKISMET as spam. Most users never see it.

I have been slammed by spam the last few days, no idea as to why. Right now I have Akismet installed but may need to evaluate another option to work in tandem to eradicate these silly spammers.
