Okay everyone,
I am trying to add what I think is called a Favicon to my site (the little image in the brower's tab). I have created a favicon through an online service, but the trick is I can't understand some of the jargon that tells me how to upload it to my site.
For example, one set of instructions tells me:
- Publish the icon into the root directory of your web site.
This is the location Internet Explorer will automatically look for your favicon when a visitor bookmarks your site.
- Help the browser find your icon by including in the html, within the <head> tag, the following: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.your-web-site-name.com/favicon.ico">.
Preferably nearer the closing </head> tag, because more important information, such as your meta tags , should come earlier.
- Save your web page and publish it.
If you want to create different icons for different pages, simply call them something other than favicon.ico, but still retaining the .ico suffix.
Link to them in your pages in the same way as above, just changing the href location for the different icons.
I can master many things, but I have no idea whether I should be trying to upload this icon within wordpress or somewhere in my webhost (bluehost). To be honest, I am not sure what is meant by root directory.
Any tips for the newbie would be appreciated. Thanks,

You are on the right track. Just drop the favicon.ico file into the root folder for your Wordpress installation in your public_html directory. You will probably need to go in with FTP to upload the file unless you are using a theme that allows for favicon uploads (like Thesis).

I use a different platform than Wordpress, but I believe to make it work with Drupal I had to point to a favicon icon url using some setting in my theme. It still didn't work for Internet explorer, which is mentioned in the instructions you posted above.
For it to work with Internet explorer you need to log into the file system on your host (Bluehost) and upload favicon.ico to the "root directory" which is the main directory where all of your files for your site are stored. It's usually called "public_html" or something like that.
If that doesn't work, let us know.
I use the FileZilla FTP client to access the files on my server. You can probably do it through cPanel too though.

Thanks everyone! I realized that I still had the bluehost one and it didn't grab my reader's attention. This one fits with my theme and I couldn't have done it without you.

Thanks everyone.
@Tony, if you clear your browsing history, it will show you the new one. Click on the wrench, options, under the hood, then "clear browsing history" and make sure cache is selected. Then, when you return, you should see the new one. Let me know if that doesn't work. That's how I got to see the change.
