Hi Yakezie members, I am a new challenger here. I just wanted to know a few questions:
1. How much time do you spend commenting on other people's blogs? I know the more the merrier, but I just wanted to get a barometer from the members here.
2. What is the best way you keep up with new posts of other members? Facebook, subscribe to rss, emails or twitter?
Thanks for all the help.

I probably spend about an hour per day reading and commenting on a core group of a dozen and a half blogs that I have bookmarked. I have over 50 blogs in my Google Reader that I remember to skim about once per week and will usually comment on one or two of those. Then I follow a couple of people who tweet a lot of posts and that's how I find a lot of fresh content. If the title catches my eye, I will save it for later and read it then.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I used to spend A LOT more time but things have been really busy around my office and at home. If you are a new blogger or new to the challenge commenting is almost the ONLY way to get yourself out there. It should be a huge priority

I spend way less than I should! It's really one of the best and cheapest forms of marketing, and also a good learning experience.

I have no idea! Maybe I shoudl try and count somehow. I comment and read blogs when I'm on breaks at work or waiting for other contractors to do their part of a job before I can get started. So it's a lot of little bits of time. Now I wonder though….

I use Google Reader to keep up. I subscribe to the RSS feeds and that gives me a consolidated list. I do have so many subscriptions that I don't open every article, but will skip over titles that don't look interesting. So titles matter! And because I subscribe to so many, it's a requirement that you publish a full feed in order for me to read. If you don't publish a full feed, sorry but I unsubscribe.

I used to spend hours and hours commenting per week. Now, I don't comment as much as I interact with readers and other bloggers on social media. So I would say less than 20 minutes a day.
That doesn't mean I'm not reading blogs though. I just stopped getting value from commenting as much.
The best way (in my opinion) to keep up with other bloggers posts is on Google Reader. That's where I do all of my blog reading.

Hi Cheapnfrugal. When I was new to blogging, I spent a ton of time commenting on other blogs (typically at least 10 comments per day). It was a very effective way to get new eyeballs on my site. After about a full year of this, I started dialing back. When you get to a certain point, commenting on other sites will become less and less effective. Once you get quite a few eyeballs on your page, then you can start to build it even bigger through referrals. Good luck!

My goal is 10 comments per day, although I have recently bumped up that number due to the fact that I am trying to cross-promote/connect with the lifestyle and mom blogs.
I generally keep up with other Yakezie posts by A.) adding them to my RSS reader, B.) Listing the bloggers I follow on HootSuite so I can get to the relevant updates faster and C.) searching the #yakezie Hashtag on Twitter to see the latest posts and activity from group members.
Here's more of what I am currently doing/using to connect with others and promote my blog…
RSS Feeds:
I used to use Pulse reader to keep caught up on reading & commenting on blogs – I am now also skimming/checking relevant topics to comment on via a different Android app on my phone and tablet too – ReadIt. ReadIt is a Google/RSS feed reader that is plain jane – no distracting (shiny) pictures like on Pulse reader. I can scroll down the list on my tablet and quickly identify relevant posts, go directly to the source and comment.
Pinterest
I have been making a big push on Pinterest to connect with other "money savers" in the community. I pin EVERY post I publish (must have good graphics!) and pin at least 10 items from the boards of other pinners. I try to follow back everyone who follows me, and especially try to seek out/follow the Pinterest boards of other PF bloggers, pin their stuff, and hope they will do the same for me ;) Join me? Thriftability on Pinterest I also maintain Pinterest boards for my social media business, BuzzWord Media on Pinterest and personal pins – Lisa Weber's World on Pinterest. I devote less time to those two boards, but still find it easy to Pin my blog posts across all three and "catch" more pins, page views and clicks by using all three.
Blog Carnivals
I am making a stronger effort to submit to blog carnivals (both personal finance and lifestyle blog carnivals) AND to host carnivals on my blog.
Anyone else? How often are you commenting — and what else are you doing to promote your blog?

For last couple of months I have been a sluggish blogger, didn't do my piece of networking much. I used to spend an hour each day on commenting, now, not even 10 mins. Things should change from new year.
I read blogs through Google reader and Yakezie twitter list. also I regularly scan through Yakezie blog network page for interesting topics.

This community is great. I think this thread will help other beginners. I guess what the overall sense is that commenting is essential for starters. Once you network well it will be a little less necessary. I really appreciate the help here. Look forward to my comments on your blogs! . btw.. Happy Holidays y'all.

As others have mentioned.. As a new blogger.. Commenting is huge.
If you are trying to drop your Alexa as part of the Alexa challenge, it is absolutely critical
(because you need other bloggers to visit your page).
We used to spend 2-3 hours daily between my wife and I, growing the site.
But as blogger burnout starts to kick in, that number has been scaled way back.
These days, we spend around 3-5 hours p/week commenting between the two of us.
Like many others, we have a google reader setup for subscriptions.
Anyone that comments our page gets priority, of course..
