How to know how many links are on your homepage

Hello, and my apologies if this has been covered before…

An advertiser wanted to pay a lower rate because I had over 200 links on my homepage.  Does anyone know the name of a (free) tool that can determine how many outgoing links are on your homepage?

Thanks!

Kris

That's a good one.

Generally, advertisers don't like to see more than 10 links on a page point toward other domains.  Fifteen is tolerable, but definitely not preferred.  You only have two sponsors, so that's not bad at all for a link buyer.

However, they are probably concerned about the number of tags you have on each post.  That creates a lot of lost link-weight from the homepage toward tag pages that, all things considered, really aren't worth much to your internal SEO nor the linkbuyer.  Ideally, you want to keep as much "google juice" on the least amount of pages possible without making it difficult for humans to use your blog.

Thanks to both of you, it was exactly what I was looking for.

I went and got rid of the 'Sociable' widgets there was on my post and excerpts on the front page, and that got my grand total to less than 200.

I am conflicted about 'tags'.  I am still figuring the whole tag/keyword thing out and probably not doing it right at all!

Thanks again!!!

Tags are good for adding keywords to the meta of a post, but you can do that without link-loss by adding the plug-in "All-in-One SEO Pack" and editing the keywords on each post from there.

You're doing it just fine, but it all really comes down to how you spread your links around and the benefit of each link on your site.  Roughly 40 links, 20%, of your homepage links are tags.  That means you're losing 20% of your link weight to promote your tag pages.  That link-weight would be better spent on your individual posts because tag pages are pretty much worthless in google.  Ever searched for anything and landed on a tag page?

I do use All in One SEO pack.  So I should just enter keywords there and ignore the post tags if I understand you correctly, right?  (I wasn't sure if tags helped when searching on your own site.)

Your search bar is based on Google's, so whatever works best for google will work best for your internal search.  When you use the on-site search it's like typing site:www.yourdomain.com into the Google.com search area.

OK, so I should ditch tags and use keywords- got it!  (I normally used the same words for both in the past.)

Woah, maybe this is part of the reason I was recently rejected as having > 500 homepage links. The tags might be part of it… I might have to do something about this.

Okay… I am confused, so should I remove tags completely or what?

I am confused too Aloysa.  I have All in One SEO pack where I specify a title, keywords and description.  As part of my wordpress template, I have a  place to specify tags.  I have always just used the same words for both, but I am guessing that is wrong.

Advice from experts please?

I don't have much to contribute here. But I remember a thread where Crystal was suggested by an advertiser to use tags in the front page for SEO purposes? And also sites like technorati indexes you on the tags (this is the reason why I am going to start using tags from my next post actually).

Hmm, I just disabled my tags on the front page due to the too many links syndrome. Now I'm confused again…

See, I didn't know if you used All in One SEO pack, if the keywords entered there acted as 'tags' so you didn't need the tags that you specify in the wordpress template?  I have tried reading up on this, and have just gotten confused.

I am going to compromise and use the tags on single page only. I don't
sell text links so the only outside dofollow links from my home page are
my blogroll and my top commenters, which I am planning to keep. I am
going to remove the tags from home page just to keep it clean. You just removed it from the front page right? so may be that is good enough compromising…

Yep, I kept it on the single page!

That advertiser a few months ago suggested tags or more specific categories.  I hated the tag cloud I added, so I've removed that, removed all tags, use the keyword box from All in One SEO, and I picked better categories and put them as a list on my home page.  Removing the tag cloud and sociables buttons on my homepage has put me under 200 homepage links.  :-)

In my limited experience, the advertisers are generally concerned more with the number of external links, not the number of internal links.

Don't tags create loops within your own site only (internal links)?

Yes, tags are internal, but Micaela (the advertiser that cared for me), cared about ALL links.  I brought my total down from 320ish to 191 and she raised my payout rates.  :-)
