I joined a few days ago, and as I've been commenting on other blogs, I've noticed that many of them kind of do a "round up" once a week or so of posts they liked from other Yakezie blogs around the 'net. I thought this was a cool idea, but I'm curious – should I email the bloggers and ask permission, notify them, etc.? I'm new so I'm wondering about the etiquette here. Same goes for the rotating blogrolls I've been seeing – should I get permission and/or alert sites I list? Is there a plugin or something I can use to make a rotating list?
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to do it right.
Thanks!

No need to ask permission – any of us would love to be featured in a roundup, and the ones using Wordpress will get a notification that you linked to their posts. :)
As for the rotating blogroll, I use a plugin called Better Blogroll. Basically I had to input all the sites using the Links option in the Wordpress dashboard, then the widget in my sidebar picks 10 of them at random to show up at a time. But I also have a huge Blogroll page in case someone wants to see all the sites I like.
Hope that helps!

Most bloggers will be happy to be added to your blog roll. I know I would!

Okay is it because I have a free wordpress site that I don't get notifications when someone links to me? I mostly notice due to huge increases in my traffic that day.

Check in Settings > Discussion to see if the box is checked for "Allow link notifications from other blogs."

Yup it's checked. The only time I get a notification is when spam people (and now I'm thinking of people made out of spam) link to me.

That's a great idea. I'll have to look into implementing it myself.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

Hmm… I don't know. I get a notification every single time. I do have it set to notify me of all comments, so maybe that's the difference.

I have that checked to…I have a theory that I repel technology–most people at work agree with me. (I always think of myself as a little girl trying to pick up a kitten or puppy and them running away when I think of my relationship with technology)

Ditto to everything said here!
I try to do a roundup every week but realistically it's about every two weeks.

Definitely no need to ask for permission, everyone is happy to be included in a fellow blogger's roundup!

Trackbacks are what happens (if you have them enabled) when somebody (a wordpress user) links to a post of yours. I think the person has to be a fellow wordpress user; maybe I'm wrong but there are plenty of times I'll be in a roundup or link love and wont' get a track back.
