Hi all,
Trying to optimize my site and I get warnings about not properly using meta tags. Any advice and best practices? Web guru I am not. Have a great weekend.
Thanks,
Buck

Chris and Forest are the web gurus. You should ask them.

Hey Buck, personally I use a plugin called ALL IN ONE SEO that allows me to set meta info for the site and individual posts. I am not sure how much it matters for Google these days but worth getting in order anyway.

Google has some pretty comprehensive information on meta tags:

Since you're using Wordpress, a lot of this should be take care of already (such as the title and description tags). Plugins such as ALL IN ONE SEO and themes like Thesis allow you to customize the tags beyond what WP already offers.
However, when you say you were trying to optimize your site, what tool were you using to analyze it and what exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Hi nerdwallet,
Gonna read your link soon. I can't recall exactly, but I used some free website tools to analyze my website. Since I am a newbie, just making sure my website is optimized properly. One of the items mentioned on the reports was meta tags…

All In One SEO plugin is the standard, to echo Forest. On my sites I now use Thesis which takes care of everything.

For SEO purposes, the meta tags are just one piece to reinforce the general trend of the content. If you are pushing for a specific keyword, it's good to have that keyword in the meta tags.
For other purposes, your meta tags are what will display with your site when you search in Google. A good meta tag can draw in searchers.

all in one seo is a good plugin, but if you can spend the 80 get the thesis theme, customized just for seo purposes so the code is not convoluted. it has the seo pack built into it. it has worked very well for me from a seo/serp perspective.

Woo themes come with a similar set up to all in one now too. Their theme Canvas is very similar to Thesis but easier to use. I can't send it to anyone who wants to test it out but you will to buy it if you want to go live with it…. Same offer goes for any Woo themes.
