Hi Everyone,

This is a probably a question that never ever gets asked, but I have a different situation than the rest of you (by reading your blogs).

I have been into blogging for years, my main blog is my travel site and also about my expat living. I have always been involved with personal finance and investing for me. I decided to start a personal finance blog because of my passion for it and the lack of resources for women on how to invest their money (since I'm not a saving money blogger), which I started for the challenge.

My dilemma is this – I live in Guatemala, not sure if you know about the dangers of it here, regardless, since starting my blog, my friends have been saying it's way too dangerous in the respect I am exposing to the world that I might have money, which means in Guatemalan terms my kids are worth kidnapping (they do this for a measly $500).

Not your problem and I'm probably giving more info than not, my main question is this – I really want to be part of the challenge and really part of the group, but won't be able to do the personal finance blog until I move to Chile which is in 10 months.

Can I still be with you guys on this challenge but via my expat blog and travel blog? OF what good will this be? OR should I wait until I move to Chile where it's a lot safer and I can be totally transparent about my investing practices and have a more ongoing back and forth with everyone?

The great thing about the Yakezie Network is that we have two areas – finance and lifestyle. I'd say your travel blog can enter the challenge in the lifestyle category, and you can always enter the finance blog separately once you move. Lots of us have multiple sites.

I can't imagine having to worry about something like my child being kidnapped – definitely do what it takes to keep yourself and your family safe! I'm glad you'll be moving somewhere safer, and I really look forward to more of your perspective once it's safe to tell us about it.

Thanks Andrea!

It's a great idea, I can't find the lifestyle blogs. There's a great list for the finance, but I can't find the lifestyle ones. do you know the link?

The Lifestyle side of things is a little underdeveloped compared to finance, but the posts are in this section of the forum: http://yakezie.com/forums/lifestyle/

Definitely join the challenge with your travel blog (I loved it, by the way.) You want to enjoy blogging and not constantly be looking over your shoulder, worrying about your family. Do what is safe for you and your family. Yakezie is a very welcoming community. Your travel blog will be a great addition.

The lifestyle section is for you.  My blog is not a PF blog either, but fits more in the lifestyle section.  This is a wonderful supportive community and I promise the PF bloggers don't look down on those of us in lifestyle! Wink

Hi my name is Jai. My wife is Colombian and used to go there every year for the summer. Pablo Escobar was in full reign in case you need a visual. She always felt safe but one thing she always told me was don't reveal how much you are worth. That means every year that I go to Colombia she reminds me to not bring certain things. I have never felt unsafe and I was born and raised in NYC in the 80's when NYC was pretty bad so I have a certain respect for knowing how to handle myself… I would suggest you don't expose yourself that way. It's one thing if you didn't have kids but it's another that you do. My wife said NO. So I say NO too.

I hope this doesn't bust any bubbles but when it comes to family, kids and your well being I think it's more important than money.

Jai

I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Jai it sounds like you and I have a lot in common. Escobar is dead, but there are quite a few of his twins running wild and ruling the Guatemalan streets. BTW, I'm dying to go to Columbia! Once I move to Santiago, I'll be somewhat closer and we have a lot of friends, love Columbians have found them to be some of the most together people I've met in Central America in the past 10 years.

Ironically, I LOVE living in Guatemala, but it really limits me in talking about my life and sharing with people about my experiences. But I am embracing the move to Chile, just gotta be able to afford a country 5 times more expensive than Guatemala and still maintain the sweet lifestyle I have here:)

I'm glad to be part of this community and have now announced my challenge on the other blog which is part of my travel business one:

http://travelexperta.com/expat…..-the-ride/

Am very excited for this group! Can't wait to read and get to know you all!!!!

Hi Marina. Since you probably do not know where and when you will move after Chile (as expat you probably can never tell; you may move to another more dangerous country), why not just starting the personal finance blog under a different (pen) name? Have your travel blog under "life style" and sign up under a different name again for your personal finance blog. It is extra work, but you keep your "finances" separated. Maybe I did not get your situation clearly an dthis advice does not make sense, but I would avoid using your real name for a finance related blog.

Hey Van!

YOu are actually very very right. To be honest with you, I'm tired of being an expat :) I am desperately hoping that Chile will be our home. However, I totally see your point.

What I'm going to do, is for now write down all my experiences in drafts on my personal finance blog, then when we move and I get a better feel of what is happening either publish them via my original one or a whole new one with a pen name.

I like to stay with the blogs I have since I've been blogging for so long and google knows me and my domains are highly ranked. That's why I want to see what it boils down, safety and other factors.

Holy, that's just terrifying! Have you considered blogging about money anonymously? I'm anonymous, although I'm sure if somebody wanted to bad enough they could find out who I am.

Wow–sorry your options are between safety and flogging personal finance. I think you are making the right decision to hold off until the next country, and glad you can stay via the lifestyle vertical.

Safety is paramount! Once you are in a safer region, then you can reveal more if you're comfortable doing so. Agreed with Jai and the others. :)

I can't imagine the stress of having your personal safety (or your childrens) in jeopardy. I would go ahead to join the challenge based on your real life experiences in the lifestyle section. The PF niche is very well catered to so it's probably easier to stand out amongst lifestyle bloggers. I share a lifestyle blog and it's doing great.
