I recently changed my font to a custom one that looks handwritten. I wanted to make my writing look more unique/personable so I was going with a handwritten font. I just wanted to hear your opinions on custom fonts. I don't know if I'm just changing something that's not being changed on other blogs for a reason. Like it's tough to read or it doesn't really make any difference. What do you think. http://www.Financiallypoor.com

It's not too hard to read, but it does make scanning a little bit tougher for people like me. It definitely makes the site look less businessy – I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not really. It wouldn't chase me off though. Good luck!

Hey Kevin,
I kind of like the way it looks, and it definitely stands out. But I could see a lot of people having trouble reading it, especially if they have higher resolution settings or eye problems. Looks pretty cool though.

I agree! It definitely looks unique. Like Crystal said, it's not quite as quick to scan, but hey, you could be on to something genius!
Give it a try for a month or so and let us know how it works!

It is unique, I totally agree. But it looks too busy to my eyes, along with the feature post changing and a non-white background, a unique font makes it a little distracting to me. I had to make an effort to concentrate. Might be just me though…

Hey Kevin, I agree with Suba. I think it may be too much with the background and the other widgets on the site. You may have to add a few extra headers in order to help people navigate through the longer articles.

Kevin,
It is different. It makes you focus a lot more. It may be rough on the eyes for some of your readers though.

I expected to hate it before clicking the link, but its actually decent. I could live with it as a reader.

Personally, I had a little bit of a hard time focusing on it. (Maybe it is because of the letter 'g'.)
I think that type of font is better for a personal-type blog myself. But maybe it is just me…

There is a reason why every site doesn't use its own fonts. Not all OS/computers are equipped to deal with custom fonts. I'm assumming most do, but not all. With Times or Ariel, you are guaranteed these fonts are available and that's the reason sites stick to these standard fonts.
Of course with CSS you can substitute if a font is not found, but the site won't look the same.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say it is terrible. I find it practically unreadable.
When I was developing my own site, I spent a lot of time playing with fonts. I never went as fancy as you did, that's for sure. I tried lots of different fonts, but then I discovered that installed fonts are very different from Windows, to Macs, to Linux so I decided to go with something more basic. Fonts are even quite different between different versions of Windows.
I wouldn't want to discourage you from using custom fonts, but right now it is WAY over the top, at least for me. I'd stick to the fancy fonts like what you are using now for section headings and possibly menus. For main text it needs to be readable. If you can find something that is different but also widely supported and very readable then I would say it is good to be different.

I appreciate all of the feedback. From what I've read I'll tone it back a bit but still keep it custom. Thank you everybody.

The main font you've chosen now is definitely better!
There are still a few that I find a little bit annoying like your course sign up form is pretty hard to read. However, I think it will capture the minds of people who are more creative than I am and interest people who are looking for something fresh that doesn't look like every other blog out there.
