I may have discussed how I do not get many of my URLs showing as indexed in webmaster tools (even though they show up when I type site:http://everydaytipsandthoughts.com.
Well, since my page rank came out lower than expected and my URLs don't seem to be indexing, I looked closer at my sitemap. I am getting the following message out of webmaster tools:
duplicate meta descriptions: 174
duplicate title tags: 175
I know that Google ignores what it views as duplicate content. When I click on the dup meta descriptions for a post, it shows this:

Hmm, did you recently change your permalinks within wordpress?
I noticed that your /category/ urls are redirecting to the urls without category. If this was a recent change, I imagine that this issue will go away soon. Does it show a date for when the problem was last discovered?
1- Are your /category/xxxxx links in your sitemap, along with your /xxxxx links? If so, remove the /category/ versions.
2- You should also use a robots.txt file to prevent Google from crawling pages that it might think are duplicated. In this case, you'd probably want to prevent them from crawling the /category/ pages. They've got some good information here: http://www.google.com/support/…..wer=156449

Good information! I need to find a new sitemap, so this will give me the criteria to look for. Thanks!

My Battle to Lose 100lbs and Pay off $100k in Debt:
Thanks for all the info. My problem is, I am pretty clueless about sitemaps. My Google XML Sitemap plug in asks what all I want to be included in the sitemap. I just basically checked almost everything. The list below is how I have my sitemap setup. I take it I should remove the check mark from tags and categories??
Further options:
This is highly recommended and helps the search engines to know when your content has changed. This option affects all sitemap entries.
I'm not familiar with the plugin, but you basically only want each post/page on your site to be listed in your sitemap once. So I would also remove the authors and maybe even the archives.
This won't necessarily stop google from crawling the pages as if they are duplicates though, which is why you should also look into robots.txt.
I use that plugin. You are right, get rid of category and tag pages (and author pages). I am not sure what the impact of removing archive pages is, so I have left that in, but I think that should probably be removed too.
