My web designer said opening links in new windows hurts seo and most links should open in same window.

Can anyone confirm this? I've never heard it before?

I don't know about SEO implications, but I find links that open a new window to be really annoying. I don't like sites telling me how to browse the web.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

Hi Edward – I'm the opposite actually, I prefer to have a new window opened, so consequently I post my links this way, but I'm interested in understanding more about why it is not convenient for you and also the answer to the SEO question posted by Barbara, because I hadn't heard this before.

I don't know about SEO either, but I choose same window or new window based on these criteria:

Same Window: This is where I want my visitor to be forced to go.  Maybe an opt-in page, or an affiliate link.  By having in the same window they have to go there (essentially)

New Window: This is what I use for related posts or other info.  Am I linking to a past article that the reader may like but isn't necessary, then new window.

I hope that makes sense!

Thanks for the input.

this is what my web designer said

"I wanted to address one thing off the bat. It's the links opening in a separate window. This is a really, really bad for your website. I would strongly urge you to reconsider this. The rule of the thumb is that internal links, links that go to another page on your site DON'T open a new window but links that go to a site other than yours (external) DO open a new window.

This is a really important thing because it can – annoy your audience, cause problems with your site down the line and can be bad SEO-wise."

I actually got this verified by a seo expert I know as true. I never followed this approach and had all links open in new windows.

Although, I don't know how "bad" for seo it is, as I checked many popular mainstream websites and they are all over the place on this issue.

Basically, it's what I said. I don't want somebody else telling me how I should browse the web. If I want to open something in another window, I can do that myself. Besides, I generally don't click links until I'm done reading the page I'm on, so in that case, there is no reason to leave the original page open.

OK, thanks for clarifying.  I think I'll start doing the no new page for links within my blog but new page for links external to my blog.  Cool

This is one example of how much seo and website stuff is important in addition to just creating content.

Who knew?

I love the term "SEO expert". Remember, if they were such an SEO expert, make sure they show you their highly trafficked site due to their SEO efforts, otherwise, are they really an expert?

The large majority of my links open in new windows due to preference. I'm a Multi tasking reader who likes to read two things at once. Hasn't hurt my SEO, and my conversion rate is relatively high. I don't want readers having to lose their place in article when they are directed elsewhere.

BAck to my prior point:

As with many issues, there may not be one right answer.

Opening links in new windows does not affect SEO.  I have been doing this for years and have never had SEO be affected by opening links in a new tab or window.  I don't know who was the person telling you this, but it is false.  Opening a link in a new tab is only dealing with user preference.  I open links away from my blog in new windows. If they are on my blog, then they go in the same window.

From a personal perspective, I prefer tabs opening in a new window.

From an SEO perspective, I can't really see how this can impact SEO.

From a browsing perspective, I would imagine that it is better to open in a new window and I feel the user may be more inclined to come back to the original content if it is still open in the original tab/window.
