I just signed up for the Yakezie Challenge, but i also just switched to a self hosting site. Before the switch I had around 158,000 Alexa ranking. Since the switch I am now over 17.5 million. I guess my question is, would my goal be under 100,000 Alexa ranking in six months, because of my previous number or under 200,000 because of my ranking now?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'd start with what you are now. I did the same thing last year – moved to self hosting and joined the challenge a month later. I still met the challenge in under 6 months.

Hey Niki – I'd just set your goal at 200k. I'm sure you'll reach it easily!

You are essentially starting over in a sense so I would say the goal should be 200k!

Thank you to all of you. I think that will be my plan. I am trying not to be too discouraged by such a large ranking, I know I can lower it!

Yep. Self hosting is the way to go. Congrats on switching over and good luck getting back down to 200,000! I expect that you'll get there inside of 3 months since you already had such a low Alexa Rank before.

Thank you.

I am excited to see how this goes. I was a bit shocked by 17.5 million.

I agree with the others…since you are starting over, your goal should be 200k.

Good luck! That is too bad that you have to start over after having achieved such a low ranking.

When you switched, did you get a new URL? Moving to self hosted should not have such a big impact unless the URL changed too. Either way, it was a good decision to move. You are now a blog owner, not just a writer.

I did change it, but it has already lowered to 1.9 million in a couple days. It hopefully won't take too long. Looking at Google Analytics, it looks like my visitor/page views have increased.

One of my DIY crafts was featured on craftgawker, that is the source of my increase and Yakezie is helping out too.

I have a dumb question. What are the benefits of not using wordpress–being self hosted?

When I switched over to my own domain, I went from about 600k back up to several million. It stressed me out! But it came back down very quickly and now I'm oh so close to 200k. Once you move, it seems like it goes much faster!

Thank you Lisa, you are so kind.

Yeah, I am so excited when I checked my ranking today it was less than 300,000. I think you are right Andrea about it coming down quickly and it does seem that my traffic has increased almost double.

Just a thought .. Even if you moved to a self hosted blog I think you can do a 301 redirect to protect your page rank and keep all the ranks intact. Again I am sure you can protect the page rank , not sure about the Alexa Rank. From a pure SEO perspective you can keep all the link juice intact if you do a 301 redirect from the old blog to the new self hosted one.

Google 301 redirect and I am sure you will get all the answers.
