Does anyone have experience with either and which do you recommend?
I tried using Yoast but I keep having issues with it. The first time, it wouldn't let people search on the blog. The second time, it showed a fatal error message if anyone tried to comment. As soon as I remove it, these problems go away.
All in One doesn't seem to have all the features of Yoast though. I especially like being able to check what I need to fix with Yoast.
Any tips on fixing Yoast? Or do you prefer All in One?

They're about the same… I've used both and had success with both. Neither is going to give you an advantage over the other in terms of SEO though.
If Yoast is causing problems I would just use all in one instead.

I use all in one and have never had problems – but I've never given yoast a try.

I use All-In-One…its very easy to use, though not sure that I use even something as simple as this plugin to its full capabilities…

All in one has worked well for me, the secret is the words you put into the plug-in.

Is it best to use phrases or words? I try to insert phrases that I imagine would be presented when one starts typing in the Google search box.
Since I just migrated last month from Blogger to Wordpress, I'm slowly going backwards in my posts and adding information into All In One. I'm hoping this is a worthwhile exercise.

I've used both, and I prefer Yoast. The developer is pretty accessible on twitter, @yoast , and might be able to help you troubleshoot the problem you're having. I would try reinstalling it entirely first. Delete the old install files, reupload the plugin, and see if that fixes the problem.
If you're already inputting data into the all-in-one, however, you might as well stick with it. You'll still get good results with it. Yoast just has some extra bells and whistles.

Love Yoast!
I'd second this! Importing info over from all-in-one is fairly painless too. Though both are pretty useless if you're not focusing on specific keywords.

Maybe I should give Yoast a go, I looked at it briefly before and didn't understand everything…. If I put some time aside I am sure I could work it out.

Either phrases or words can work. Generally, the longer the phrase, the less searches there are for that term. But longer phrases often have less results, making it easier to you to show up higher on the page in Google.
I've been using All-in-One the whole time and have always liked it. It's simple and gets the job done. Maybe I'll give Yoast a shot just to see how it looks.

I use All in One. I find that phrases and questions work best in the description box.

Questions is one I hadn't really thought of. Good thing to know moving forward. Amazing, been blogging for over three years yet still feel like a complete rookie when it comes to the SEO aspect.

We are all rookies in some ways, SEO feels like pan handling for gold so much of the time!

So is it worth it to spend all that time on adding info to plugins, or are you better off just writing your posts with SEO in mind? If you have good titles and good content with the right keywords in them, do you get that much better results with the plugins? I've gone back and forth with All in One and I don't seem to notice much of a difference when I get lazy and stop using it. Of course, I could be missing something…

Great question. I have often wondered the same thing.

I would say the plugins don't take long to set up so it isn't a big effort.
I replaced All in One with Yoast last night and have to say I think it is a worthwhile move. It has a lot of features past just SEO including robots.txt management and even sitemaps (still working that part out)…. I think it will combine about 3-4 plugins into one for me.

My guess is that starting or stopping won't have an immediate effect, but that it's gradual. If you stop using it you might not see a difference in the short term, but in the long term, I'd guess that those articles might not make it as high in the search rankings.
Just my guess, anyways!
