Hi Folks,
A couple friends and I are planning a 2-3 week work/play jaunt to Spain and Portugal this July and I'm wondering whether you guys have any tips on where to party and eat? I've been to Barcelona once for several days and loved it, but I've never been to Madrid and Lisbon. Any helpful links you know please feel free to highlight.
I'd like to interview and study more of the culture so I can do some further investigative reporting on the state of Europe for my site.
Will anybody also be there the middle of July as well? Would be fun to meet up!
Thanks,
Sam

Cool list Eric! We are definitely going to hit some clubs as I'm going with a friend in the spirits industry who sells his product there.

I used to live in Barcelona, there are several neighborhoods with lots of cool bars and small restaurants
El Born is hipster, organic tapas, fancy wine bars, in a medieval part of town
Barceloneta is next to the beach, for seafood and cocktails
Old town around Las Ramblas to mix with the crowds, although most places are a rip off.
Gracia, more authentital with narrow streets and little squares with trees and shade where you can have a drink while people watching
and Tibidabo, overlooking the city, ideal at night or on a clear day.
A few hotels have pools on the top with bars that you can access as well.
July is pretty hot, especially in Madrid.

Pauline, thanks for the tips. I fear the heat coming from SF, but that's why we plan to go out late at night :) We're gonna train on the clay courts in the early morning though!
Do you think you could live and retire in Barcelona?

Sam, I lived in Madrid, and have been to Barcelona 3-4 times. I am soooo jealous. Have fun. There are so many great spots I'm sure you will get leads when you get there and start asking around. Have a vino tinto for me.
