Have you ever found yourself should-ing all over the place? It is an epidemic that affects millions of people every year. The symptoms are very apparent and can cause numerous health issues.
If you are unaware of should-ing, then below are a few questions you can ask yourself to see if you are should-ing all over the place.
Have you said or thought any of the following?
1) I should loose weight
2) I am in a career not because I enjoy it, but because everyone said I should do this for a living
3) I chose this major because my parents said I should
4) I should eat healthier
5) I should spend more time with my family
6) I should stop watching so much television
7) I should get my finances in order
8) I should try harder at work
9) I should read more
10) I should learn something new
11) I should network more
12) I should __________(Fill in the blank)
Obviously I am joking (sort of), but many times in our life we find ourselves saying we should do a lot of things. Unfortunately “should” doing something will never actually help accomplish what you want to do. The only thing that will accomplish that is actually doing it.
The myth we tell ourselves is we don’t have time for all the shoulds in our lives, but we do. It is just a matter of what is most important to us. Many times what is more important is disguised as the path of least resistance. That is why we should all over the place.
As I always say, we all have 24 hours in a day. Instead of should-ing all day…start doing all day! If you should loose weight…start an exercise program. If you should eat healthier…try the paleo diet for a week(check out Steve Kamb’s site for great info on paleo or Joel Runyon’s site). If you should read more…wake up 30 minutes earlier everyday. If you should spend more time with your family…schedule that time!
It is possible to stop should-ing all the time. There is no special medicine…just more will power.
What are you going to stop should-ing about today?
