bogofdebt – that is exactly it. Some landlords get characterized as slumlords and some tenants as deadbeats. Then there are the rest of us. I painted out house last year and redid the hardwood floors before the current tenant moved in. I also painted most of the rooms. Each summer we plan plants outfront and try to spruce up the place. It was a bit rundown when we purchased it.

We were dream tenants before we left – rent was always paid by the 27th of the month because I am anal, we called in and requested permission before we ever changed or fixed anything (because I would want to know before someone "fixed" something big and ask if they knew what they were doing), and we always left our place better than when we moved in. If we ever rent out our current home, I will be looking for people like us…hmmm…maybe I will look for pf bloggers in Houston that need a place to live.

I'll admit that when I moved into this house it was a wreck–they had the deadbeat renters before us. The deadbeat renters (I previously worked with them) warned us that the landlords were horrible and never fixed anything. I however have never had a problem with our landlords. They are amazing and fix everything when we let them know something is broken (like our furnace). But I think they respond so well to us because we do take care of the place and are interested in sprucing it up a bit.

I' am just about to head over and watch the video now…I used to be a landlord myself and some of the excuses were outrageous!
The most common one had to be "i'll pay you double next month I promise!"

Wow. Sounds like you (the personal finance blogger) should sit them down and go through an FPU-style class. That should whip 'em into shape! But, alas, you can lead a horse to water….as they say.
