I recently wrote about things to invest in other than the market. Feel free to read and comment:
Many times when we discuss investing, we tend to only think about stocks, bonds, and real estate. These are all great things to invest in, but there are a few non-market related vehicles you should consider as well.
You won’t get a paper statement from these ideas, nor will you see your money fluctuate. As a matter of fact, sometimes it will feel like your money is being thrown away. However, if you invest a total of 3-8% of your money in the following areas; I believe you will become richer and more quickly than you ever imagined.
Here is my list of 7 things you should invest your money in for maximizing your income and life.
1) Books
Yes…you can go to the library and check out books, but how many people really do that? I suggest you get the Kindle app on your iPad and download one book every month to read.
Stay away from sleazy sex novels and focus on books that will improve your career, learn something new, or on self-development. If you read one book a month, that should only cost you about $120 for the entire year (or about one month of cable). This $120 will pay dividends for years to come.
2) Organizations
The internet is great, but you really need to get out and meet people in your area. Just chose one group and attend their monthly meetings with the goal of meeting one new person each month. I do suggest you chose a group you have some interest in or you probably won’t attend regularly.
Typically you can find a great organization with fees only being about $100 a year. Check out the Rotary Club, Alumin Groups, Toastmasters, Chamber of Commerce, 20-30 Organizations, and many more.
3) Conferences
Industry conferences or trade shows are a great way to meet new people. Go to these events and network with as many people as possible. You never know who may be there or who may hire you as their next big star. Many times you can get into these with little or no cost.
4) Online Courses
Ever want to improve your LinkedIn Profile (Check out Lewis Howes)? Or learn to code a iPhone apps? Maybe you want to be an author (then go to Goins Writer). Or maybe build a huge online following (ThinkTraffic).
Whatever you want to do, check out courses online. You can find many free courses (be cautious because you get what you pay for) or pay a $100 for some great, informative courses.
