Thoughts on the nature of retirement

I've recently been thinking about the concept of retirement, especially early retirement. I never understood why people get so excited by the idea. Then I realized that they aren't talking about the same thing as I am.

When I talk about retirement, I'm talking about no longer working. Sitting in a rocking chair and playing with the grandkids. That sounds nice, but it also sounds really boring after about 1 week. That's why I always say that I have no intention of ever retiring. Maybe one day switch gears and take on a part time job doing something simple like being a Walmart greeter.

But I always want an alarm clock waking me up in the morning with somewhere I need to be going. Because I suspect the alternative feels a lot like my current unemployment.

I suspect that most people that talk about early retirement have no intention of actually retiring, just moving on to something different.

I wrote more on these thoughts today: Is It Time to Retire the Concept of Retirement?

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I totally agree!  I am preparing for retirement (again) and I already started volunteering.  I want something to do for at least a couple hours everyday otherwise I could easily get bored.  Blogging is a nice outlet too, but I want to get out of the house as well.
