Hey guys,
After months of amazing Alexa drops, I have settled just below 100,000. Can't complain, but now I sometimes see it going the other way.
How do you guys deal with this? Could this be from Google's new formula? Is this a just a natural blogging scenario?
Thanks!

Alexa is not impacted by Google other than the traffic you receive from the search engine. It is primarily based on visits from people with the Alexa toolbar (or related extension) installed.

Mine went from 100000 up to almost 150000. Now back below 120000. I was not as active as I was working on a special project/course. Keep on keepin on.
I noticed Crystal encourages her readers to install the toolbar. Haven't tried that, and it should work.

Oh that's interesting. Our ranking has been increasing now for a week…I assumed that's a re-balancing after the media attention. We'll see. I am behind on my weekly posts though.

I try to look at the long term progress. I also have days now where it goes up, but I write down my rank once a month. When I look a month later, it has always dropped overall (just not as quickly as I would like!).

Keep in mind that the usual rank you see is a three month average. If you had a big bump 3 months ago then it could have dropped off the average. Same if you had a recent traffic surge – you might see your Alexa going up for a bit as past lower-scored days fall off.

Thanks Craig, that is interesting advice that I did not know. It also explains a lot, like why one day last week I could have a huge day traffic-wise and barely see a change while another day could be my worst day traffic-wise in ages and the next day my rank dropped a lot. Made no sense!
My ranking is still dropping but much slower than I would like! It has taken me 12 days to drop 150,000 in the rank and I still have 130,000 to go to hit the 200,000. Each day the drop seems a little smaller than before. At one point I was confident I would hit it but now I am getting worried.

Thanks all for your feedback and advice.
The Single Saver, keep up your good work and your Alexa rank will take care of itself. Just remember to continue to work the forums, leave thoughtful comments, and most importantly writing good content.

It sure does slow down Buck. Since we broke 100k just over 3 weeks ago we're down to 85,801 24 days later. Long gone are the days of dropping 15k or even 30k in a day!

It can be hard because initially, you can see big leaps in terms of Alexa ranking. Once you get around 130,000 or so, it is more like little jumps or skips.
Craig is right, it is a 3 month average. I got below 50k, and then I had to spend less time on my blog for a few weeks because of family circumstances. Even though my current traffic is back to regular levels, my ranking is getting worse each day. My hiatus is catching up with me now.
Keep on writing!!

I try not to focus too much on Alexa day-to-day. Alexa is just a ranking of how your traffic stacks up against other sites on the web, and it's a poor measure at best since it relies so much on surfers having the Toolbar installed (which most internet users do not).
As long as your traffic (and perhaps more importantly, your income) is growing steadily, then you're ok. Alexa is simply an backward-looking indicator to corroborate what your traffic is probably already telling you.
Of course, it's always nice to know where you stand, and everyone loves a contest ;-)

Great point by NerdWallet. I use traffic as more of a judge as to my site's popularity.

I completely understand your concern/interest. It can be kind of addicting to try and maintain steady progress downward. I compare the ranking bar with life itself; you will have ups and downs, but the long term (months and years) is what really matters.
Try not to get too hyped up in the day to day or month to month, as long as you are continuing your blogging activities.
That said, I'll cofess that I get influenced by the ranking ups and downs, and try not too look at it every day!

I plateau at around 70k or so and now I don't pay much attention to Alexa Rank anymore. Traffic is a much better indicator of how the site is doing. Google Analytic shows my traffic is still increasing slowly so I'm still happy.
My SE traffic is also doing a lot better than when I first started!

SPF,
Yeah takes some adjusting to. If I'm lucky I get a 1,000 point drop. You are a machine, 85,000? That's impressive work!
everydaytips,
Yeah I'm just working on writing these days. Seems to be paying off. Thanks!
nerdwallet and mark,
Good point about traffic. I'm trying not to get hung up on stats these days. Alexa has been our main metric since the challenge. Weird when it doesn't drop or even goes the other way. I'll adjust. Thanks!
Barb,
Gonna focus on blog activities, too!
RB40,
Hopefully one day I'll get to 70K. Congrats on your traffic!

It went back up 600 pts. I'm getting used to the ups and downs now.

Ha! I cracked the 200k mark, and got ready to write my Yakezie post. Now I'm back up to 237,000. One step forward, two back…

eemusings, I totally understand your frustration… I'll visit and try to help you out.
Friday I had the best day that my site has ever seen, traffic-wise. I logged in Saturday and expected to see a big Alexa drop and found hardly any change. That happened once before… I had a great day and no change, then a couple days later I had a very bad day and the next day my ranking had dropped a lot. I am just thrilled that my traffic seems to be increasing!

eemusings,
Where is your website link on your profile or signature? Would visit, but don't know how to reach you. Thanks!
