Are surveys the new polls?

All my adult life I have religiously voted and steadfastly refused to participate in telephone polls.

Now – seeing how all election results seem to be announced before the polls close – by using surveys, I'm wondering if politics is actually decided by the surveys that are taken.  Decisions are made based on them, causing some candidates to remain in the race and other's to drop out.  Maybe voters are also using polls to decide how to vote?

Do you think survey's are replacing the voting process – and if so, is that good or bad?
